GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Triple jumper Ann Doty was the only Bison competing on Saturday afternoon at the NCAA East Regional at the University of Florida, as the rookie leaper had a top distance of 37'10" in the event. The distance was not enough to qualify her for the event's final, as only the top nine of 35 entrants advanced. Even so, it was a successful meet for Bucknell, as Melanie Buczko and Maria Garcia will be making Bucknell's first appearance since 1996 in the NCAA Championships at Austin, Texas.
From the final position of the first of three flights, Doty leapt 36'3 ?" in her first attempt and followed it up with the 37'10" effort. In her final attempt, Doty was unsatisfied with her jumping sequence and continued through the pit.
On Friday, rookie Melanie Buczko placed fourth in the pole vault, earning her a place in the national meet, while senior hammer thrower Maria Garcia snagged an at-large bid on the strength of her season-best 202'8" at the Patriot League Championships a month ago. Though she finished eighth in the regional competition, that distance was the fifth-highest season best among all throwers in the country not to finish in the top five at one of the four regional sites. The top five athletes in each event at each site qualify for the national meet, while the top five season-bests are also taken from the athletes who did not qualify at the regional sites.
The national meet at the University of Texas will take place June 9-12. The pole vault and hammer qualifying rounds will be held on the first two days, respectively, while the final rounds will be held on the last two days.
