NEW HAVEN, Conn. - There was a Bucknell school record broken at the ECAC/IC4A Championships on Saturday, though Maria Garcia had her exceptional streak of five-straight meets bettering her own Bucknell hammer throw mark snapped. Melanie Buczko became the first Bison woman to vault 13', indoors or outdoors, as she launched herself 13'3 ?", winning the ECAC pole vault competition by four inches over Northeastern's Laura Chmielewski.
The Bison women totaled a seventh-place 18 points through the third day of competition at Yale in New Haven, Conn., with Maria Garcia's second-place finish bringing in the other eight points for Bucknell. Garcia had won all six hammer throw competitions entering the ECAC meet, bettering her school record by more than 20 feet over that span. But the senior fouled three of her six tries Saturday and came up just three inches behind Patriot League foe Jennifer Leatherman of Navy with a top toss of 192'8". That throw still out-distances her personal best entering the year by 12', though comes up short of her current best by almost 10'.
Bucknell's 4x800 relay squad had considerable success, finishing fourth in the preliminary race in 9:00.70, the second-best time in Bucknell history. Jennifer Marsh, Laura Nagy, Lauren Bricker and Christa Sawko combined for that effort. Their 4x100 relay counterparts, Amy Calvo, Rehana Lanewala, Sarah VandenBroek and Tolu Fayanjuola, finished 24th in their preliminary race in 48.60 seconds.
Fayanjuola finished 24th in the preliminary 100 meter race, completing the dash in 12.38 seconds. She also finished just out of the scoring in the long jump, with a ninth-place leap of 18'11 ?".
Also in the pole vault, Angie Hall finished 15th with a vault of 11'3 ?", while Angie McFarland bettered her second-best all-time Bucknell mark in the hammer throw by an inch with a ninth-place toss of 173'1". Marjorie Grap finished 18th in the event, throwing 158'11".
Bucknell's men stand in 23rd place with five points through three days, all of which were turned in by Noel Powell's fourth-place 24'7 ?" long jump. Also competing were Ryan Newberger, who finished 24th in his 200 meter preliminary race in 22.63 seconds, and the 4x100 relay squad of Nick Novotny, Newberger, Justin Crane and Powell, which finished 17th in 42.00 seconds.
Sunday's schedule of Bison eligible to compete includes the women's 4x800 relay team for that race's final, as well as Ann Doty in the triple jump and Grap in the shot put.
