PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Just three days after scoring a school-record 23 goals in a win over Denver, Bucknell's women's lacrosse team also showed it can also win a defensive struggle. Meredith Wright's goal with 4:42 to play gave the Bison a 5-4 win over La Salle in a non-league game at McCarthy Stadium Tuesday afternoon.
Wright, who just missed the school single-game scoring record with 11 points in the win over Denver, was shut out against the Explorers until her team needed her most. Trailing 4-3 with less than 15 minutes remaining, Wright assisted on Laura Nuss' tying goal, then Wright hit the back of the net herself off an Emily Burman feed for the game-winner.
Bucknell (6-4), which won with its lowest scoring total since a 5-1 victory over St. Joseph's in 1999, led only once all day until Wright's winning tally in the closing minutes.
La Salle goals from Tracy Guenther and Becky Boudwin surrounding a Bison tally from Andrea Paraud represented all of the offense in the first half.
Bucknell tied it just after halftime on Tory Field's free-position shot, then Burman scored an unassisted marker four minutes later to give the Bison a 3-2 lead. Catie Borneman and Marla Falcone scored back-to-back goals just 34 seconds apart to push La Salle back on top with 15:24 to play.
Nuss tied it 14:54 remaining, setting the stages for Wright's game-winner, which was her team-leading 24th tally of the season.
Bison netminder Lizzy McDaniel turned in one of the best performances of her career, making 16 saves while allowing just the four goals on 27 shots faced. Brittany Friedrich had 14 saves for the Explorers on 28 Bison shots.
Defensively, Bucknell kept LaSalle's two leading scorers, Kristen Davis and Kate Henwood, who had a combined 37 goals coming in, off the scoresheet.
The Bison have won three of their last four contests heading into Saturday's crucial Patriot League home date with Colgate. That game will be a rematch of one of last year's Patriot League Tournament semifinals, which was won by Bucknell 13-9.
