LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sophomore goalie Lizzy McDaniel stopped a career-high 20 shots but the Bucknell women's lacrosse team could not quite overcome a late three-goal deficit and fell to Drexel 13-11 on Wednesday evening at Graham Field.
Emily Burman registered two goals and two assists, and Meredith Wright, Katie Edge, Andrea Paraud and Tory Field also scored twice for Bucknell (7-6). Kerry Kelly had four goals and an assist, while Nicole Adams scored three goals for Drexel (9-5).
Back-to-back goals by Adams gave the Dragons a 12-9 lead with 9:30 remaining in the contest, but some crucial saves from McDaniel down the stretch sparked Bucknell's comeback attempt. Wright, Bucknell's leading scorer, had been held to just one assist over the game's first 54 minutes, but her unassisted goal with 5:10 to play made it 12-10. Moments later, Wright made a sparkling defensive play, picking the pocket of a Drexel midfielder in Bucknell's defensive half. She scooped the ground ball then bolted all the way to the goal and scored to bring the Bison within 12-11 with 3:24 to play.
Bucknell won the ensuing draw but quickly turned the ball over, and Drexel was able to play keep-away for the final three minutes. With McDaniel out of the crease chasing the ball, Kelly scored into an empty net with one second left to make the final 13-11.
The Dragons dominated the early portion of the game, taking a 4-1 lead on Chrissy Sheehan's goal with 18:16 left in the first half. Bucknell slowly climbed back into it, however, winning a number of draws to set up a game-tying 4-1 run. Burman scored twice in a row, then Field scored on a nifty one-timer off a long crossing pass from Edge, tying the game at 5-all with 4:31 left in the half.
Adams scored one minute later to give Drexel a 6-5 halftime cushion. The Dragons outshot Bucknell 23-13 in the opening half, but McDaniel made 11 of her 20 saves during that span to keep the Bison close.
After Drexel opened the second-half scoring, consecutive goals by Edge and Field tied the game for the final time. Kelly's goal with 18:50 to play gave the Dragons the lead for good, and Emily Hoesch's goal with 17:12 left made it 9-7.
Three times the Bison were able to get within one goal, but they could not pot the equalizer.
Maggie Koch made eight saves for Drexel, which outshot Bucknell 44-25 for the game. It was the 11th straight year that Bucknell and Drexel played a game decided by four goals or less.
The Bison host Patriot League rival Lehigh on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Graham Field. It will be a final tuneup prior to the Patriot League Tournament, which begins May 1 at either Colgate or American.
