LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's lacrosse team received four nominations to the 2004 All-Patriot League teams, just two days prior to its second Patriot League Tournament appearance in program history. Attacks Meredith Wright (Bethesda, Md./Holton Arms) and Katie Edge (McLean, Va./St. Stephens & St. Agnes) and defender Rachel Prowler (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) received first-team honors, while attack Laura Nuss was named to the league's second team. Each of the accolades were the first for the honored player. In addition to the first-team nomination, Wright has also been named the Patriot League's Co-Offensive Player of the Year along with American's Becky Copeland.
The two honors recognize the record season Wright has had this year. The senior leads the team with 31 goals and 23 assists for a total of 54 points, with a season high of 11 points (five goals, six assists) against Denver for the second-highest total in school history. Her season assist total ties her for the fourth-best single season total in school history, just four behind her own school record set last year. The 54 points are also fourth-best all-time, putting her eight back of Sue Gray's record set in 1984. Wright is second on the career assists list with 56, 18 back of Melissa Montefusco's 72 completed in 2002. She will have at least one more game to move closer to those record marks.
Edge is the only freshman on the league's first team and earned the honor by scoring 27 goals and seven assists for 34 points, all team third-bests. She has eight multi-goal games this year of the 14 in which she has played, including a season-high of five against Wagner. The goal total is the most by a freshman since Suzanne Raffaele's 35 in 2000. Raffaele finished with 144 goals as a Bison, a school record.
Sophomore Prowler has started 13 of the 14 games in which she has appeared, only ceding her starting spot for Bucknell's Senior Day last weekend. She leads a defense that has allowed 140 goals this season, just three more than last year's 15-game total with Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year Nicole Kallis in goal.
Nuss finished the regular season with 30 goals, second on the team, as well as a team third-best 34 points. The 30 goals were an individual season best, giving the senior 80 for her career. While starting all 14 contests, Nuss has had seven multi-goal games this year, with a high of five against Colgate, a possible league tournament opponent.
As a team, the Bison are 8-6 overall and 4-2 in Patriot League play. Bucknell qualified for the third seed in the Patriot League Tournament, which begins for the Bison at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday against second-seeded American. Top-seeded host Colgate and fourth-seeded Lafayette will face off at noon, with the two semifinal winners playing on Sunday for a berth in the NCAA Tournament. It is the second time the Bison have qualified for the Patriot League Tournament in its four-year existence after making the final game last year.
