HAMILTON, N.Y. - Despite miserable weather conditions that drove scores skyward throughout the weekend, the Bucknell men's golf team turned in a solid fourth-place finish at the Patriot League Championship, which concluded Sunday at Colgate's Seven Oaks Golf Course. Bison freshman Charlie Waddell finished sixth individually and earned his first All-Patriot League certificate. The Orange & Blue finished just two shots out of second place and 16 out of the lead.
Steady rain, high winds and temperatures only in the upper 30s wreaked havoc with one of the Patriot League's strongest fields. A tournament-low 302 in the second round propelled Army to the team title. The Black Knights shot 930 overall (320-302-308), followed by day-one leader Lehigh at 943 (316-313-314), Navy at 944 (317-308-319), Bucknell at 946 (319-311-316), American at 952 (314-314-324), Lafayette at 970 (320-328-322), Colgate at 980 (321-326-333) and Holy Cross at 1013 (346-332-335).
Billy Hurley of Navy shot a second-round 71, the low score of the tournament, and claimed the individual title by six shots over D.J. Reeves of Army. Waddell recorded rounds of 80-78-75, the latter representing the Bucknell's low card of the weekend. Waddell finished alone in sixth place 10 shots behind Hurley and just one out of a tie for third place.
Three other Bison finished in the top 15. Tom Lane shot 81-78-78 and placed 12th. Tying for 13th were Ben Pellicani (79-79-80) and Patrick Yingling (79-76-83). Abbie Valentine, Bucknell's No. 1 player, struggled in the poor conditions, shooting 83-80-84 and finishing in a tie for 28th. Alex Dolle could not relive his terrific 67 at St. Peter's earlier in the week and finished tied for 36th after rounds of 86-84-84.
