HAMILTON, N.Y. - Patrick Yingling and Ben Pellicani shot opening-round 79s and the Bucknell men's golf team is in fifth place at the halfway point of the Patriot League Championship, which opened Saturday at Colgate's Seven Oaks Golf Course. The first 27 holes were played Saturday, with 27 more to come on Sunday.
Scores were high on Saturday, as no player in the field shot better than 75 in the opening round. Bucknell's low man through 27 holes is freshman Charlie Waddell, who shot 80 in the first round then completed the first nine holes of round two in 37. He is tied for seventh place at 117.
Yingling shot 79-39 and is in 10th place at 118. Pellicani opened his second round with 41 and is tied for 17th, while Tom Lane shot 81-40 and sits in a tie for 20th.
Bucknell's top player, reigning All-Patriot Leaguer Abbie Valentine, struggled to an opening-round 83, then shot 42 to start the second round. Alex Dolle, who is coming off a victory at the St. Peter's Invitational after shooting a school-record five-under 67, shot 86-42 on Saturday.
Despite the high scores, Bucknell is only six shots out of the lead going into Sunday's play. Lehigh at 470 has the clubhouse lead, but American, Navy and Army all rest just two shots back at 472. Bucknell is at 476, followed by Lafayette (479), Colgate (485) and Holy Cross (514).
Navy's Billy Hurley, who finished second at the Patriot League Championship last year, has a four-shot lead over Todd Shagin of American, D.J. Reeves of Army, Sean Cusick of Colgate and Alan Borowsky of Lehigh. Hurley shot 76-35. Cusick's 75 led the field in the first round.
