Navy Knocks Bucknell Men's Tennis From Patriot League Postseason Contention

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell's men's tennis squad dropped its Patriot League finale 4-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Gerhard Fieldhouse to the Midshipmen from Navy, ending the possibility that the Bison (7-9, 1-5 PL) might advance to the Patriot League Tournament later this month.
The match was moved to Bucknell's indoor facility due to rain, and was called when Navy reached the requisite four points as Gerhard Fieldhouse has just three courts.
Navy claimed the first doubles match off the courts as Brandon Carter and Stanley Kahl defeated Gerald DiChiara and Aaron Saperstein, 8-4. Bucknell tied the doubles contest with the duo of Asher Salam and Joe Menezes beating Davy Lee and Adrian Lai, 9-7. But the Mids went up 1-0 in the match when Ryan Osgood and Nate Malnati defeated Nick Denefrio and Matt Pikus, 8-6, to clinch the point.
After Kahl knocked off DiChiara, 6-2, 6-4 at first singles and Carter defeated Salam, 7-6(4), 6-2 at third, the Mids clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-3 win by Osgood over Denefrio on court two. Bucknell's Joe Menezes had begun his match against Davy Lee when the coaches agreed to call the contest.
The Bison will have four more matches in the next eight days to end the 2004 campaign. Mount St. Mary's and UMBC will come to Lewisburg to battle both the men's and women's stringers on Thursday and Friday afternoons, respectively, while the Bison men will conclude the home season on Sunday versus Binghamton. Both the men and the women will travel to Bloomsburg to end the season on April 21.
