Bucknell Women's Golf In Fifth After First Round of P.U.P.S./Big South Championship

GREENWOOD, S.C. - Bucknell's women's golf team placed three players in the top 20 and stands in fifth place at the Palmetto Utility Protection Service Big South Championship, which got underway Monday at rainy Greenwood Country Club. Celine Herbin shot 79 for the Bison, who are in their second year in the Big South Conference.
Despite the miserable weather conditions, Bucknell's team total of 333 was its best yet in the event. The Bison finished in sixth place last season at Sea Trail Golf Resort. Bucknell trails first-round leader Coastal Carolina (309) by 24 strokes. Birmingham Southern at 317 and Charleston Southern at 325 are the closest challengers. Defending champion UNC Wilmington is in fourth place with a 326 composite, followed by Bucknell, Radford (335), High Point (335), Winthrop (341) and Holy Cross (391).
Herbin became the first Bison to break 80 at the Big South Championship. Her seven-over 79 puts her in 10th place in the 43-player field. Jaime Hays shot 37 on the back nine to finish with 80, good for a tie for 11th place. Also for Bucknell, Meredith Kalman is in 20th place after carding an 84, the second-best round of her career, while Teri Schlang shot 90.
Natalie Cruse of Coastal Carolina and Tiffany Shoppe of Charleston Southern both shot even-par 72 to take the early individual lead. Becky Berzonski of UNCW is one shot back.
Bucknell tees off at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in the second of three rounds.
