LEWISBURG, Pa. - Kelly Winning scored four of her five goals during Colgate's dominant second half, as the Raiders defeated Bucknell 17-9 in a Patriot League women's lacrosse game Saturday afternoon at Graham Field. Laura Nuss scored a career-high five goals for the Bison, who fell to 6-5 on the season, 2-2 in the league.
Colgate (8-4, 4-0) broke open a one-goal game at the half by outscoring the Bison 12-5 over the final 30 minutes. The Raiders outshot Bucknell 21-11 in the second half and scored eight of the first nine goals of the frame.
Amanda Bradshaw's goal with 2:48 to play in the first period broke a 4-4 tie and gave Colgate a slim halftime edge. But four goals in a span of only 3:35 early in the second half changed the game's complexion. Winning scored twice in that run while Anne Coomber and Katie McVeigh tallied once each. Nuss finished a feed from Katie Edge to halt the Colgate surge momentarily, but the Raiders outscored Bucknell 4-0 over the next 12 minutes to take a commanding 13-5 lead.
Back-to-back goals by Nuss and Emily Burman brought Bucknell within 13-7 with 8:44 to play, but a goal from Winning followed by two straight from Bradshaw ended the Bison's hopes.
After Colgate took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Winning 6:32 into the contest, Bucknell scored three straight to grab an early two-goal lead. Nuss scored the first two, the latter on a free-position shot, then Burman fed Andrea Paraud for a 3-1 lead.
Colgate answered with three straight of their own to take a 4-3 lead before Meredith Wright scored an unassisted tally with 8:16 left in the first half.
Bradshaw finished with four goals, Tara Casey had three goals and McVeigh had two goals and five assists for the Raiders. Goalie Sue Bielamowicz finished with nine saves.
Bison goalie Lizzy McDaniel made 11 of her 16 saves in the first half. Burman and Edge were multi-point scorers for Bucknell with a goal and assist each.
Colgate outshot Bucknell 40-26 and held a 16-12 edge in draw controls, including seven of the first eight in the second half to spark its surge.
Bucknell falls into a third-place tie with Holy Cross in the Patriot League standings, pending the Crusaders' outcome in their game with Lafayette on Saturday. Colgate moved into a first-place tie with American. The Bison return to action next Saturday at Villanova at 1 p.m.
