CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Tom Lane hacked 12 strokes off his first-round score, turning in a career-best even-par 72 to help Bucknell to a sixth-place finish in a 24-team field at the Lafayette Invitational, which concluded Saturday at Center Valley Golf Club.
On a day when Bucknell's top three players from the first round all saw their scores go up, Lane helped the Bison shoot 309 on Saturday and 612 for the tournament, the best among the three Patriot League teams in the field.
Binghamton shot a two-over 290 on Saturday and won the tournament by 19 shots over runner-up Siena. The Bearcats totaled 586 over 36 holes while Saints finished at 605. Fordham (610), Connecticut (611) and Robert Morris (611) rounded out the top five. Bucknell was able to pass league rival American by one shot. The Eagles slid from 297 to Friday to 316 in the final round and finished at 613. Niagara (619), Delaware (621) and Duquesne (622) completed the top 10. Host Lafayette, the other Patriot League squad in the field, shot 626 and finished tied for 12th.
Bucknell's Alex Dolle and Abbie Valentine both opened with matching 74s but finished with 80s. The duo tied for 29th overall. Patrick Yingling finished in a tie for 37th at 76-79. Charlie Waddell shot 78 Saturday after a first-round 79.
Lane's 72 was one shot better than his previous career-best, set most recently this past fall at the Bucknell Invitational.
Binghamton's Keith Henrickson shot a final-round 70 and finished at two-under for the tournament to win the individual title by one shot over Saint Francis' Eric Couture.
The Bison return to action on Monday in Rehoboth Beach, Del., at the George Washington Invitational.
