Bucknell Track and Field Competes at Virginia Commonwealth

RICHMOND, Va. - The Bucknell track and field squads sent just six athletes between them down to Richmond, Va., to compete in the Ram Invitational and open Bucknell's outdoor season, and those athletes represented the Bison well. Bucknell had two event winners and three other performances in the top four of their events over the Friday-Saturday competition. Freshmen Marjorie Grap and Josh Kaehler also entered the Bucknell record books in their first collegiate outdoor meet.
Christa Sawko, Catherine Trentacoste, Marjorie Grap, and Maria Garcia represented Bucknell's women's track and field team. Sawko won her 400 hurdle competition, beating Coppin State's Shannon Boodram by .20 seconds while finishing in 1:05.40. Trentacoste finished 12th in the 400 event in 1:10.13 and 13th in the preliminary 100 hurdles event in 16.11 seconds.
Grap competed in the discus, shot put, and hammer throw in Richmond. Throwing a fifth-best Bucknell all time distance of 42'5 ?", Grap finished third in the shot put, 1'3 ?" behind event winner Sarah Vance of Buffalo. Grap also finished fourth in the discus, tossing 123'5", and 14th in the hammer, throwing 105'6".
School-record holder Maria Garcia won the hammer event with a toss of 177'3", 3'8" off her school-record distance.
Kaehler and Justin McKnight represented the men's team and both threw the javelin. Kaehler threw a ninth-best Bucknell all-time 188'7", finishing fourth, while McKnight finished sixth and threw 183'2".
Bucknell's athletes will be split between three meets next weekend, including the Jim Thorpe Invitational at Penn State, the Susquehanna Invitational in Selinsgrove, Pa., and the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif.
