COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Joe Walters had three goals and four assists to lead No. 2 Maryland to a 14-7 victory over Bucknell on Wednesday. Freshman Brian Gargan, a Baltimore native, had two goals and Chris Cara, the nation's leading scorer, logged a goal and two assists for Bucknell, which dropped its third straight contest after a 2-0 start.
Maryland (4-0) raced to a 4-0 lead before Cara put the Bison on the board 3:06 into the third period. Ian Healy, Dave Matz and Justin Smith all scored in a span of 1:58 to give the Terps a commanding 7-1 lead. Ross Albers scored with just 12 seconds remaining in the first half to make it 7-2 at intermission.
Walters and Xander Ritz scored 54 seconds apart early in the third period to make it 9-2 before Cara fed Wes Fetchet for a man-up goal for the Bison.
Another four-goal run, this one capped by Walters with 9:49 left in the fourth, pushed Maryland's lead to 13-3. Bucknell finished strong, however, scoring four times in the final 8:57 of the contest.
John Salvesen and Gargan scored 17 seconds apart, then Gargan and freshman Kirk Klett finished off the scoring. Another rookie, Steve Case, notched his first collegiate point with an assist on Gargan's second tally.
Cara now has 15 goals and 13 assists for 28 points in five games.
Matt Baran had a good day in net for the Bison, finishing with 15 saves against a high-powered Maryland offense that generated a 48-25 shot advantage. Bucknell's EMO unit had another strong day, scoring twice in six attempts. The Bison are now 14-for-28 on the season.
Brendan Healy also scored three goals for the Terps, while Tim McGinnis and Harry Alford made four saves each between the pipes.
The contest was originally scheduled to be played at Bucknell on Tuesday but had to be moved south due to the snowstorm that struck much of the northeast.
Bucknell returns to Patriot League play this Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at Holy Cross.
