ORLANDO, Fla. - Sophomore Kris Devore delivered a bases clearing triple to right centerfield in a three-run second inning for the Bison as the softball team picked up its first win of the season in its first game at the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla., on Monday, March 15.
Junior Kelli Haskins threw all seven innings for the Orange and Blue, striking out five and allowing just three hits. The right-hander carried a one-hitter into the sixth inning and did not allow a Catamount runner past second until Vermont's final at bat.
The Bison did most of their damage in the top of the second inning. Freshman Michelle Danish delivered a one-out double to right field for her second two-bagger of the season. After freshman Katherine Heatley lined out to right field, junior Jill Pompeii and senior Kristen Potts drew back-to-back two-out walks to load the bases. Devore stepped in a delivered her three-run triple up the middle to stake the squad to a 3-0 lead.
Bucknell struck again in the fifth when senior Angela Stackhouse smacked her first homerun of the season over the right center fence to give BU a 4-0 advantage.
Vermont's only run came in the bottom of the seventh. Ashley Stebbins was hit by a pitch with two outs, and Christine Toomey followed with a walk. Pitcher Meghan Doonan, who entered the game in relief in the fourth inning, delivered a single up the middle to score Stebbins, but Doonan was thrown out trying to stretch her hit into a double and the Orange and Blue came away with the 4-1 win.
Stackhouse finished the game 2-for-4 with one run batted in. Devore went 1-for-4 with her first three RBI of the season. Haskins moves to 1-1 on the year after allowing just three hits and one earned run.
