ORLANDO, Fla. - The Bucknell softball team answered a three-run Fordham inning with a two-run effort of its own, but that would be all the scoring either team would get as the Bison dropped a 3-2 decision to Fordham on Thursday, March 18. The loss was BU's first defeat at the Rebel Spring Games.
The Orange and Blue got the first real opportunity to score when sophomore Lauren Wible led off the bottom of the second with a double to right centerfield. The Rams got out of the inning unscathed, however, as pitcher Sara Kinney struck the next two batters out and got freshman Katherine Heatley to foul out to the catcher.
Fordham capitalized on its chances in its half of the third when Erin Brooks started a two-out rally with her infield single. After a Katie Davis walk put runners on first and second, a Jamie Dautel shot off of Bison pitcher Kelli Haskins ricocheted into left field, scoring Brooks and placing the runners on second and third. Two batters later, Samantha Crocker delivered a two-run single to right field to give Fordham the 3-0 lead.
BU came right back in the bottom of the third when senior Angela Stackhouse sent a ball skipping down the leftfield line to bring around sophomore Kris Devore, who had walked, and freshman Meghan Feller, who had reached on a fielders choice.
That inning would prove to be the only scoring that took place, although not without opportunities for both teams, as the Rams left 10 total runners on base and Bucknell left eight. The Bison made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh, sending the winning run to the plate after Stackhouse drew a two-out walk, but Kinney induced Wible into a high fly ball to left field to end the game.
Stackhouse finished the game 1-for-2 with both of Bucknell's RBI, including her first double of the season. Haskins went the distance on the mound for BU, giving up nine hits and three runs, all earned, while striking out two and walking three. Haskins is 1-2 on the season, while the Bison fall to 2-2 overall.
Kinney pitched all seven innings for Fordham, surrendering four hits with two earned runs, seven strikeouts and four walks. Kinney improves to 7-4 on the year, and the Rams are 13-7 overall.
BU faces Fairfield in the second game of the day at 4:10 p.m.
