ANNAPOLIS, Md. - After arriving at Navy's Lejeune Hall on Friday in third place, the Bucknell women's swimming and diving team earned 377 points on the second day of competition at the Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships to build a lead of almost 200 points over second-place Navy and put them just one day from winning back-to-back Patriot League titles. Bucknell's men moved from fourth to third, just a 1 ? points out of second place, but are well behind Navy's men heading into the final day.
Bucknell's women had 14 school top-10 performances between the preliminaries and finals, set three school records and one Patriot League record on Friday. After Meghan Freese's Patriot League- and school-record finish in the 50 free Thursday, Jamie Flick continued the trend in the preliminaries, finishing the race in 1:04.50. In the final race, she was edged out by Navy's Aubra Thomas, who provisionally qualified for NCAA Championship competition in 1:03.61. Flick picked up 17 points for the Bison, finishing the evening race in 1:04.71. Daniela Faas won the first individual event of the evening, the 400 IM, in a school- and Patriot League-record 4:26.51, more than two seconds ahead of Lehigh's Linda Hendrixson. Faas' 20 points were the largest share of Bucknell's 59-point take in the event, which saw Nikki Woodward and Laura Goeller finish in Bucknell top-five times.
The third and final school record on the day was set by Lectie Altman, who finished the 100 breast race in 57.18. She came in second in the final by .12 seconds behind Navy's Tori Throckmorton, but picked up 17 of Bucknell's 53 points in the event. Freese had the third-best time in Bucknell history with a third-place 57.48.
The evening started out with a second-place finish by Bucknell's women in the 200 medley relay, completing the race in a Bucknell second-best all-time 1:45.06. Altman, Flick, Freese, and Mary Krakowski picked up 34 points for the Bison with the runner-up finish. The men completed their relay in the third-best time in Bucknell history, as Mark Kretzer, William Schilling, Peter Garvin, and Michael Willats picked up 30 points for Bucknell.
After Bucknell's men added 40 points in the 400 IM, the Bucknell women added 43 in the 100 fly, led by Lauren Reed's third-place, Bucknell third-best all-time finish of 57.14 seconds. Following 26 points for the men in the 100 fly, Bucknell's women added 46 more in the 200 free. Bucknell's men only nabbed four points in the same event, one that saw Navy and Army combine for seven of the top eight scoring spots. But both Bucknell contingents would do well in the 100 breast, as Flick came in second for the women and Schilling won the men's event in a Bucknell third-best all-time 57.34 seconds, leading a 47-point Bucknell take. The success would be repeated in the 100 back, as Bucknell's women picked up 53 more points behind Altman's school record and Freese's third-best all-time finish. Mark Kretzer took the event for the men, finishing in a Bucknell third-best all-time 51.33 seconds as Bucknell's only scorer.
Following the addition of 25 more points to the men's bank via the one-meter dive, Bucknell's women won the 800 free relay in a Bucknell second-best time of 7:38.25, as Faas, Altman, Carlyn Donley, and Jennifer Cancro put 40 more points away. The men took fourth and 30 points in the same event.
The 540 points accrued by Bucknell's women lead Navy's 346 ?, Colgate's 338, Army's 331 ?, Lehigh's 285, American's 223, Lafayette's 175, and Holy Cross' 104. On the men's side, Navy's 540 leads Army's 332 ?, Bucknell's 331, American's 321, Lehigh's 290, Colgate's 178 ?, Lafayette's 174, and Holy Cross' 102.
Saturday will begin with preliminaries at 10:30 a.m. and finals races at 6 p.m.
