ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Bucknell women's swimming and diving team used a huge final night to come from behind and claim first place at the ECAC Open Championships on Sunday at Navy's Lejeune Hall. Clara Renner became the first woman in Bucknell history to break the two-minute barrier in the 200-yard butterfly, and the 400 freestyle relay put an exclamation point on an outstanding weekend with a gold-medal performance in the final event of the meet.
Bucknell entered the last night of the three-day meet 24 points behind host Navy for the lead. The Bison outscored the Mids 206-151 on Sunday to surge ahead and claim the title. Bucknell finished with 647 points, followed by Navy (616), Penn (565), Loyola (346.5), and Rutgers (315.5). A total of 22 teams scored points in the meet.
Dan Schinnerer earned Coach of the Meet honors after leading the Bison women to their first ECAC title. Bucknell had been runner-up four times, including each of the last two years.
The Bison made their move early in the final session with four point-scorers in both the 100 free and 200 breaststroke. Bucknell outscored Navy 56-17 in the 100 free, led by a runner-up finish from Sara Ketron. Kyla Kelly finished fourth with a personal-best time of 50.95, which moved her up one spot to eighth in school history. Jennifer Bolden followed in sixth and Rylie Giles in eighth, as Orange & Blue caps made up half of the A Final.
Bucknell added 58 more points to Navy's 32 in the 200 breast. Kelly Byrne led the way with a third-place finish in 2:16.02, which was a two-and-a-half second drop from her prelim time and makes her the fifth-fastest in school history in the event. Sydney Jee is now eighth all-time after finishing fifth in 2:18.01, and Samantha Benzija (7th), Ava Stallmeyer (8th), and Hanna Bingley (12th) also scored for the Bison.
One event later, Renner made history in the 200 fly. She took the silver medal in the event, finishing behind only Amanda Witkus of Bryant, and became the first Bison to go under two minutes. Her 1:58.21 is the new school record, bettering Julianna Foss' mark of 2:00.00 at the 2018 Patriot League Championships.
Skye Sunderhauf also made the A Final in the 200 fly and finished seventh. Earlier, Sydney Dettmann (7th) and Virginia Hastings (8th) scored in the 200 backstroke.
The 400 free relay quartet of Hastings, Ketron, Giles, and Kelly posted a winning time of 3:23.03, which is fourth-fastest in school history and was just .09 ahead of runner-up Penn.
