Garcia Breaks Weight Throw Record Again as Bison Prep for Patriot League Meet

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell indoor track teams entered their final meet before the Patriot League Championships come to Lewisburg on Friday, Feb. 20, and several Bucknell athletes proved that the Bison are ready to welcome their conference foes to Gerhard Fieldhouse.
Maria Garcia was one of four women's athletes to switch things up in the school record books, as her weight throw toss of 54' ?" beat her previous school record, set two weeks ago, by 1 ?". She finished second in the competition to Syracuse's Johnronnie Hernandez, who broke the Gerhard Fieldhouse record with a toss of 61' 8 ?". Angie McFarland moved up in the top-10 rankings in the event with her seventh-best all-time toss of 49'7".
Bison runners proved their prowess in mid-distance events, as Jennifer Marsh, who has already entered the 1000 meter top-10 list this season, took ninth place on the 800 list with a meet-best 2:17.30. Freshman Christa Sawko, who put her name on the 800 list earlier this year, had the eighth-best all-time 1000 finish, running the race in 2:57.56. Other Bison event winners included Melanie Buczko, who pole vaulted 11'9 ?", Amy Calvo, who finished the 400 in 58.12 seconds, and Mariel Fink, who won the 500 in 1:18.96. Two Bucknell women's relay teams won their races, as the Bison took the 4x400 in 3:57.81, and the distance medley relay in 12:45.46.
Event winners on the men's side were Kevin Walsh won the 800 race in 1:57.27, and Bucknell alumEvan Honeyfield, who won the 5000 race in 15:17.46 as an unattached athlete. Bison silver medalists included the distance medley relay team, which finished the race in 10:26.97, Wes Reinhardt's mile finish of 4:23.09, Noel Powell's 400 time of 50.00, Tom Prochilo's 500 time of 1:07.52, Matt Forys' 5000 time of 15:22.17, and the 4x400 relay team's 3:26.17 finish. One fieldhouse record was broken on the men's side, as unattached athlete Jon Kalnas threw the shot put 61' ?", breaking his own record by 3 ?".
The Patriot League Championships will commence on Friday, Feb. 20 and run through Sunday, Feb. 22. Bucknell's women won last season's indoor conference meet at Colgate by 60 points over Army, while the men's team (126 points) took a close third behind Navy (139) and Army (128).
