Bison Track and Field Squads Set to Kick Off Season Saturday

LEWISBURG, Pa. - After a full fall of training and preparation, the Bucknell men's and women's track and field teams are finally set to begin the 2004-05 campaign with the Bison Opener on Saturday Dec, 4, at Gerhard Fieldhouse. The action will get underway at 11 a.m. for the throwing events and 12 p.m. for the running events. Thirteen teams will make the trip to Lewisburg for the early season competition.
The Bison women will begin a season in which they hope to cap off with their fourth-consecutive Patriot League Indoor Championships while the Bison men will attempt to improve upon last year's third place finish. The Bison women return five athletes who won at least one event at last year's Patriot League Indoor Championships. Senior Tolu Fayanjuola (60-meter dash and long jump), senior Amy Calvo (400), sophomore Christa Sawko (800), sophomore Melanie Buczko (60 hurdles and pole vault), and sophomore Ann Doty (triple jump) were the five gold medal winners. All five athletes were also first team all-league selections.
Teams scheduled to compete this weekend include Georgetown (women), Gettysburg, Indiana (Pa.), James Madison (women), Lock Haven, Shippensburg, Slippery Rock, St. Francis (Pa.), Susquehanna, Syracuse, Towson and Maryland - Baltimore County.
The Bison men and women will compete a home a total of five times this indoor season. After the new year, the Bison will compete at the Gulden Relays on Jan. 8, followed by the Bucknell Octagonal on Jan. 22, and the Bison Open and Pentathlon on Jan. 28-29. In the month of February, the Bison will host the Bucknell Winter Classic on Feb. 12. Throughout the season, the teams will travel to Penn State and Kent State before heading to the Patriot League Championships at Lehigh on Feb. 18-20.
