LEWISBURG, Pa. - In a turnover-filled game that featured 54 miscues, Bucknell used a career high-tying 12 points from Hope Foster and 11 from Lindsey Hollobaugh, while forcing 26 turnovers to defeat Maryland-Eastern Shore 60-48 Monday evening at Sojka Pavilion.
The victory was the seventh consecutive home win for Bucknell (3-6), extending a streak that started last Feb. 7. The Bison have won all three home contests this year and are 15-7 all-time at Sojka.
Bucknell held the Hawks (2-7) without a field goal for the first 3:04 as it sprinted to an 8-0 lead. Hollobaugh, who added six rebounds, three assists and seven turnovers to her 11 points, scored the first six points within the first two minutes of play, while Kesha Champion added her only field goal of the game to stake the Bison to the early lead.
After a layup by Jamila Griffith, who led UMES with 11 points, at the 12:19 mark of the first half, Bucknell held the Hawks without a field goal for more than six minutes. During that stretch the Bison forced nine turnovers, but their lead grew no larger than 11 points.
With just under six minutes to play, Bucknell head coach Kathy Fedorjaka inserted Amanda Fleming into the lineup. Fleming, who had appeared in just one game this season, proceeded to make a pair of three-pointers within 90 seconds to extend the lead to from 22-14 to 28-14. The sophomore finished with a career-high eight points on 2 of 3 shooting from the field to go along with a 2 of 4 showing at the foul line.
The Bison took a 30-17 lead into halftime despite turning the ball over 19 times in the first half. The Bucknell defense forced 18 first-half turnovers and limited the Hawks to just 5 of 23 shooting from the field.
The second half saw Bucknell never extend the lead to more than 15 points, but UMES could not capitalize on nine more Bison turnovers as it drew no closer than seven points.
Foster, who scored all 12 of her game-high 12 points after intermission, tallied eight straight at one point. With Bucknell leading 43-31, Foster, who had a team-high three blocks and four steals, connected on four straight field goals over a three-minute stretch. The final two came from the outside as she canned one from just beyond the foul line and the final one from the left baseline, which was the final field goal of the game for the Bison. That score gave Bucknell a 51-38 advantage.
Over the final five minutes of play, Bucknell connected on 9 of 12 free throws, with Hollobaugh making 3 of 4, and Fleming, Lindsey Geosits and Kristina Collymore each making two. For the game, the Bison were 10 of 17 from the charity stripe.
Bucknell won the rebounding battle for just the third time this year as it outrebounded UMES 48-45. The 48 rebounds was a season-high figure. At halftime the Bison held a 30-16 advantage on the boards. Rachel Hanley and Brooke Tomovich finished with eight rebounds apiece to pace Bucknell. Tomovich equaled her career high with that output.
Bucknell shot 23 of 59 (39.0 percent) from the floor, including 4 of 13 (30.8 percent) from three-point range. The four three-pointers equaled a season high. UMES made just 15 of 59 (25.4 percent) from the floor and 15 of 29 (51.7 percent) from the free throw line. The field goal percentage was the lowest a team has shot against the Bison this season.
Kristi Veltkamp joined Griffith in double figures for the Hawks with 10 points. She also had six blocks and seven rebounds. Dayneses Stowe and Brittany Adkins each grabbed nine rebounds to lead UMES.
Bucknell will be idle for more than a week before its next game. The Bison will travel to Akron, Ohio, to play Akron Wednesday, Dec. 29. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. The next night Bucknell will play at Bowling Green.
