MIAMI, Fla. - The Bucknell women's basketball team shot 50.0 percent, but was outrebounded 51-34, including 30-2 on the offensive end, as it lost to Texas A&M by a 68-53 margin Saturday evening in the consolation game of the Traveler's Tournament hosted by Florida International. The Bison fell to 0-2 on the year, while the Aggies took third in the four-team tournament by going 1-1.
Despite connecting on 19 of 38 field goals, Bucknell could not come away with the victory because Texas A&M attempted 45 more field goals thanks to its rebounding advantage. The Bison defense limited the Aggies to just 31.3 percent shooting (26 of 83).
Along with the rebounding deficit, Bucknell also turned the ball over 32 times which led to 28 Aggie points.
Bucknell played Texas A&M even for the first nine minutes of the game as the two teams were tied at 12-12 until Katy Pounds connected on the first of her four 3-pointers to start a 27-12 run for the Aggies who ended the half with a 39-24 advantage. At intermission, Texas A&M held a 27-14 rebounding advantage, including 17-0 on the offensive end.
In the second half Bucknell played the Aggies even as each team tallied 29 points. Freshman Kesha Champion scored seven of her 12 points in the second half, while Lindsey Hollobaugh, who finished the game with a team-high 13 points, tallied six points after halftime.
After cutting the lead to 40-29 on a layup by Champion with 18:06 remaining, Bucknell allowed Texas A&M to reel off nine straight points to take its largest lead of the game at 49-29. However, the Bison answered that spurt with a run of their own as they outscored the Aggies 17-5 over the next 10 minutes to trim their deficit to just eight points at 54-46. After each team traded a pair of free throws, Pounds, who finished with 15 points, connected on her fourth 3-pointer of the contest to give Texas A&M a 59-48 advantage. Bucknell would not draw closer than that over the final seven minutes of play.
Hope Foster, who made 6 of 7 shots one night after going 0-for-10, joined Hollobaugh and Champion in double figures with 12 points. She also hauled in nine rebounds, second best on the team behind Rachel Hanley's 11 boards.
Champion, who made 5 of 7 free throws, paced Bucknell in that category as the Bison connected on 14 of 20 from the line. Through two games Bucknell has made 28 of 35 (80.0 percent) from the charity stripe.
Tamea Scales led Texas A&M with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Of those 13 caroms, eight were of the offensive variety. Pounds added 15 points as the Aggies used a balanced scoring attack that featured eight players in the scoring column.
Following the championship game of the tournament, which South Florida won 55-43 over Florida International, Hollobaugh was named to the All-Tournament Team after scoring 29 points, dishing out 10 assists and grabbing six rebounds in the two games. She was joined on the squad by Tamea Scales (Texas A&M), LaQuetta Ferguson (FIU), Lasma Jekabsone (FIU) and Jessica Dickson (USF). The tournament MVP was Ezria Parsons from South Florida.
Bucknell returns from its trip to Flordia to play its home opener Wednesday evening against Cornell. The game is slated to tip off at 5 p.m. at Sojka Pavilion.
