WASHINGTON, D.C. - Scott Visnic scored the only goal of the game as the Bucknell men's soccer team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 1-0 upset victory of first-place American Sunday afternoon at Reeves Field.
The win moves the Bison (5-8-1, 3-2-0 Patriot League) into sole possession of third place in the league standings and puts them in position to earn a berth in the conference's postseason tournament. The Eagles (9-5-2, 4-1-0 PL) dropped their first league game of the season and suffered their first loss in seven games after being shutout for just the third time all season.
Bucknell freshman goalkeeper Joey Kuterbach, who was making just his third start of the season, recorded his first shutout of the year by making 11 saves in net. After just two stops in the first half, Kuterbach made nine saves after halftime. Kuterbach now has 18 saves this season.
Visnic scored the game's only goal in the 43rd minute, just two minutes away from halftime. The tally was his sixth of the season, which ranks him second in the Patriot League. His 17 points this season lead the conference. Michael Lookingland was credited with the assist on the play.
"It was an ugly second half," said Bucknell head coach Brendan Nash. "They outshot us 16-2 as we packed the defense in around the goal. However, I was proud of the way the freshmen, especially Justin Wolf, Joe Mellott and Kuterbach, played."
The Bison wrap up their grueling six-match road trip Tuesday, Oct. 26, at No. 20 Maryland. Bucknell pulled off the biggest upset in school history with a 1-0 win over the then-No. 2 Terrapins. The victory halted a 23-game home win streak for Maryland. Tuesday's contest is slated for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
