LEWISBURG, Pa. - Lehigh junior Mary Beth Kuenne was the thorn in Bucknell's side all afternoon as the Mountain Hawks defeated the Bison, 6-4, in field hockey action, Saturday at Graham Field. Kuenne netted four goals to lead Lehigh to their first Patriot League win of the season.
The Bison bench came through in a big way with three of Bucknell's four goals coming from substitutes. Freshmen Chyncia Smith and Kelly Hoffman as well as sophomore Anne Lutz scored goals off the Bison bench. The fourth goal came from Bison starter, sophomore Alex Kyzmir.
The Mountain Hawks proved early that they came to play getting a score from senior Sheila Clabby with 17:17 gone by in the game. Moira Garrity was the next to score for Lehigh when she slapped a penalty shot past Bison goalie Liz Jordan with less than two minutes to go in the half making the score 2-0.
The Bison answered by capitalizing on a penalty corner situation with Smith scoring on an assist from senior Meiko Boynton with no time left on the clock.
After the half, Kuene picked up her first goal on the day scoring on a penalty corner with assists from teammates Kristi Miller and Krista Jamieson at the 36:49 mark. Kuene struck again when she sent home a penalty shot to put Lehigh ahead, 4-1, with 37:35 gone off the clock.
Bucknell fought back scoring two goals within one minute. The first came when Kyzmir tapped in a loose ball from the left side of the goal bringing the Bison within two scores at 4-2 at the 42:24 mark.
Hoffman was the next to score for the Bison as she made a diving shot on a pass from Boynton in front of the Mountain Hawk goal. The goal came at the 43:15 mark, just 49 seconds after the Kyzmir score.
Once again, Kuenne stopped the Bison comeback by rocketing a shot past Jordan from the top of the circle widening the Lehigh lead to 5-3. Miller and Jamieson were credited with assists on the penalty corner at the 50:47 mark.
With 57:31 gone by, Hoffman sent a pass to teammate Lutz who put the ball past Lehigh goalie Jeanine Hoff, bringing the Bison within a point once again at 5-4. With just over 10 minutes left in regulation, Kuenne put the Bison away for good, scoring on a penalty corner with assists from Miller and Jamieson.
The Bison fall to 5-12 on the season, 1-4 in Patriot League play. The Mountain Hawks improve to 8-9, 1-3 in conference play.
