UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Bucknell men's soccer team continued its six-match road trip Wednesday evening as it traveled to Penn State for its fourth consecutive road game, but came up short against the 21st-ranked Nittany Lions, 2-0, at Jeffrey Field.
The Bison (4-8-1) defense held Penn State (7-3-5) scoreless for the first 70:43 of play, but allowed both goals within an eight-minute stretch late in the second half. Freshman goalkeeper Joey Kuterbach, who made his third career start, anchored the defense as he made three saves. As a team, the Bison recorded five saves as the Nittany Lions outshot Bucknell by just a 13-9 margin.
After not scoring for the first 70 minutes, Penn State got on the board when Brian Devlin scored his third goal of the year. The Nittany Lions' second goal came at the 78:27 mark when Chad Severs tallied his ninth goal of the year.
"This was the type of effort we have been looking for all year," commented Bucknell head coach Brendan Nash. "We finally worked hard the entire game, Penn State just scored two very good goals. Hopefully we can roll this into a few wins down the road."
The Bison return to Patriot League play Sunday, Oct. 24, at American. The first-place Eagles stand 4-0-0 in conference play this year. The match is slated for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
