LEWISBURG, Pa. - With the score tied, 1-1, after one half of play, the Bucknell field hockey team came out and scored three goals in just over five minutes to pick up a 4-2 win over Patriot League foe Colgate, Saturday at Graham Field. Senior Meiko Boynton and freshman Lindsey Weller each recorded two goals for the game.
"The win today was a result of this team working hard," said head coach Heather Lewis. "This is a team win." The win ended Colgate's seven-game win streak.
The Bison scoring flurry began at the 49:32 mark when Boynton got her first score of the day and put the Bison up 2-1 with a hard shot from the top of the circle on a penalty corner with assists from teammates Alex Kyzmir and Cara Turner.
Less than two minutes later, 51:25 into the match, Kyzmir sent a pass across the circle to Weller who tipped it in from the left side of the cage. It was Weller's second goal on the day, as well as Kyzmir's second assist.
"Lindsey Weller gave us a lift off the bench," said Lewis. "It's great to a freshman who hasn't played much really understand her role and take advantage of an opportunity."
At the 54:34 mark, the Bison got their third goal in just over five minutes as Boyton scored again on a cross-field pass from teammate Callista Costopoulos.
Colgate got on the board one last time with just nine seconds to go in the game when a scramble erupted in front of the Bison goal and Colgate's Lauren Remkus tapped in the loose ball.
With 18:54 gone by in the first half, Weller scored her first career goal when Kelly O'Brien intercepted a Colgate pass at midfield and made a breakaway to hit Weller who scored from the left side of the goal.
Colgate's first score came with just over five minutes to go in the first period when Ashley Schneider caught a rebound from a Liz Jordan save and sent it home to even the score at 1-1.
Defensively, Jordan recorded 10 saves for the day while Colgate's Jacque DeMarco saved eight shots on the day. Bison senior Corin Inderbitzin-Brooks also had a good day for the Bucknell defense.
"Corin played really well today," said Lewis. "She did an outstanding job of organizing our defense and gave us a sense of confidence in the backfield."
The Bison, who improved to 5-6, 1-1 in league play, will be in action again tomorrow against Indiana. The game is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 3, at 12:00 p.m.
