LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman pole vaulter Melanie Buczko (Butler, Pa./Butler) was chosen as the Patriot League's and ECAC's Women's Field Athlete of the Week for the first time in her young Bucknell career after winning the pole vault competition at the Penn State Octagonal last Saturday. She broke her own Bucknell record, launching herself 12'5 ?", two inches higher than her previous mark. She first set the record in her Bucknell debut on Dec. 6 at the Bison Opener.
Buczko reached the ECAC qualifying mark once again, ensuring that she will compete on March 6-7 at the prestigious meet for Eastern colleges held in Boston, Mass. She was Bucknell's only event winner on Saturday, either on the men's or the women's side, and chipped in 10 of Bucknell's 20 points as the women's team finished in a three-way tie for seventh.
Buczko and the Bison will compete again on Saturday, Jan. 24 when they host their own octagonal. It will feature Duquesne, Lock Haven, Rider, Robert Morris, St. Francis (Pa.), Temple, and Towson. Field events will start at 11:30 a.m., with running events commencing at 12:00 p.m.
