LEWISBURG, Pa. - Despite an 18 point, 11 rebound effort from freshman Lindsey Hollobaugh, and a league-leading eighth double-double of the year from senior Desire Almind, the Bucknell women's basketball team could not overcome a 16-point halftime deficit in a 59-49 loss to Manhattan on January 2, 2004.
Hollobaugh gave BU its largest lead of the game with a layup at the 17:24 mark to put the host team ahead 5-2, but the Bison hit a skid at that point and did not score again for two minutes while allowing the Jaspers to embark on an 8-0 run which started and ended with buckets from Rosalee Mason. The Orange and Blue outscored Manhattan 11-4 over the next four minutes to regain the lead, 16-14, but it was short lived.
Kristen Tracey answered a Brooke Tomovich three-pointer with one of her own to give her team a 17-16 advantage it would not relinquish. The Jaspers closed out the remaining 12:29 on a 19-4 run to carry a 36-20 lead into the intermission.
The Bison came out charged in the second half, scoring the first six points of the frame to get within 10, 36-26. Much like the first half, the team hit another slump, going four minutes without scoring. This time, however, the defense forced Manhattan into four missed shots and a turnover to stay within striking distance during the stretch.
Up 41-28 with 12:51 to play, the Jaspers mounted a 9-3 run that spanned nearly five minutes and pushed the cushion to 19, the largest lead of the game. Bucknell used four points from Hollobaugh, a three-pointer from sophomore Lindsey Geosits, and two each from Almind and junior Laura Hatalsky, to claw its way back to a 12-point game with just under three minutes to play, but Mason was 5-of-6 from the foul line in the final 1:20 of the contest to keep the Orange and Blue at bay.
BU outshot the Jaspers from the field, making 40.0% (20-50) of its shots to Manhattan's 36.9% (24-65), but the Orange and Blue committed 10 more costly turnovers, leading to 25 points by the visitors.
Hollobaugh led the team in scoring with 18 points and a career-best 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Almind added 13 points and a game-high 18 rebounds, while junior Brooke Tomovich came off the bench to contribute 12 points.
Mason led all players with 26 points, while also pulling in 14 rebounds. Donnette Reed came off the bench for the Jaspers and nearly posted a triple-double with eight points, six assists and nine steals.
Bucknell falls to 5-6 overall. The Bison hit the road for a four-game road trip beginning at Fairleigh Dickinson on Monday, January 5. Manhattan stopped a five-game slide with the victory, improving to 4-5 overall.
