HACKENSACK, N.J. - Bucknell freshman Lindsey Hollobaugh hit the game-winning jumper with six seconds left on the clock, and Natallia Marchanka's game-tying layup at the buzzer rolled off the rim as the Bison held on for a 67-65 come-from-behind victory on Monday, January 5. The win was BU's first true road win of the season and gave head coach Kathy Fedorjaka her 100th coaching victory at Bucknell's helm.
The Bison built a seven-point halftime lead into an 11-point advantage 3:32 into the second. The two teams went back and forth for the next four minutes, but BU still held on to a seven-point lead, 44-37, after a Hollobaugh layup at the 12:37 mark. The Knights proceeded to score the next 11 points of the game over a three-minute span, however, taking their first lead since the 8:28 mark of the first half.
After Hollobaugh cut it to one with her only three-pointer of the game, FDU again put together a productive 11-4 run which included two long triple's from Marchanka and gave the host team its largest lead of the game at 59-51. The Bison were within three again with 2:46 to play before Marchanka drilled her fourth three-pointer of the half and sixth of the game to push it back to six, 63-57, with just under two minutes to play.
BU called a timeout after two more Marchanka points gave FDU a 65-59 cushion with just 54 seconds to play. After a missed shot on the ensuing inbounds play, sophomore Lindsey Geosits alertly found junior Brooke Tomovich at the top of the circle for a three-pointer to cut it to three. The Orange and Blue press then forced a turnover on Fairleigh Dickinson's inbounds, and Tomovich reciprocated by finding Geosits for her only three-pointer of the game with 40 ticks left on the clock to tie the contest at 65-65.
Fairleigh Dickinson came up empty on its next offensive possession and Bucknell used its final timeout with 13 seconds left to set up its offense. The Bison inbounded the ball and got it into the hands of Hollobaugh, who calmly sunk the 15-footer with six seconds to play, giving BU the 67-65 victory.
Both teams were sluggish to start the game with Bucknell clinging to a 6-4 lead with nearly five minutes gone in the half. Plagued by turnovers, neither Bucknell nor Fairleigh Dickinson could get its offense into a rhythm.
With the Bison leading 10-8, Marchanka scored five quick points to give the Knights a 13-10 lead with 11:23 left in the frame. The score remained that way for nearly two minutes before senior Desire Almind put together back-to-back three-point plays to move the Orange and Blue ahead 16-13. Krissy Suckow responded with a three-pointer to tie the game for the sixth time in the game's first 10 minutes.
With Fairleigh Dickinson leading 18-16 after a Meaghan Allan jumper, junior Laura Hatalsky gave BU the lead back with her back-to-back three-pointers, giving Bucknell a 22-18 advantage with 7:35 to play until the intermission.
FDU tied the contest again with four unanswered, before the Bison mounted an 8-0 run, including four from Almind, to take a 30-22 lead with under five to go in the half. The Knights made a push in the final 2:30 of the stanza, getting within three, 30-27 with 1:59 showing on the clock, but Almind scored final four points of the half to carry Bucknell into the locker room with a 34-27 lead.
Almind, who had a double-double by halftime with 16 points and 10 rebounds, finished the contest with game-high's of 24 points and 17 caroms. Hollobaugh ended the night with 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field.
Marchanka scored 23 points for the Knights, while Kanesha Wright added 10 points.
Bucknell improves to 6-6 and will face Iona for the second of four-straight road games tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. Fairleigh Dickinson falls to 4-6 overall.
