LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept not just the final score against Colgate on Saturday afternoon, but came close to winning every event as well. Excluding both one-meter diving events, the women's three-meter diving, and the women's 200 IM, a Bucknell athlete touched the pad first or piled up more points in every event. Bucknell won the men's competition, 193-101, for its first dual-meet win of the year, and the women's team beat Colgate 184.50-110.5 to improve its record to 4-0 overall and in the Patriot League. The men's record stands at 1-3 overall and in league competition.
The afternoon started with the Bucknell women's 200 medley relay team of Lectie Altman, Jamie Flick, Mary Krakowski, and Meghan Freese finishing the race in the fourth-best time in Bucknell history in 1:47.92 while winning the event and putting 11 points in the tote for the Bison. The men's 200 medley relay team of Mark Kretzer, William Schilling, Peter Garvin, and Jake Thieman followed, starting a winning streak that would continue for 12 additional events.
In the interim, freshman Amanda Dunlap entered her name onto the women's 1000 yard freestyle top-10 list, recording the 10th best time in school history of 10:46.82. The race was won by teammate Daniela Faas in 10:38.94. Faas already has the school record in the event. Todd Bauer won the men's 1000 free, followed by wins from Faas and John Hoffman in their respective 200 free events, and wins by Altman and Kretzer in their respective 100 back events. Jamie Flick and Schilling each won their 100 breast events.
Jackie Feinthel and Nikki Woodward entered the ninth- and 10th-best times in the 200 fly, respectively, as Feinthel won the event in 2:10.56, and Woodward finished second in 2:10.70. Michael Harrigan won the event on the men's side. Freese and Garvin followed with wins in their 50 free events, but the streak ended there as Colgate swept the one-meter diving events.
Despite not finishing first in the shorter diving events, five Bucknell athletes entered top-10 lists. Sophomore Lisa Rockwell became the school record holder by piling up 234.82 points, while Erica Minerowicz moved into the fifth spot with 171.45 and Monica Smith into the sixth spot with 161.55. On the men's side, Joseph Duncan accrued the second-best total with 237.59 points, and Jake Thompson had 237.52 for third-best.
Bucknell resumed its winning ways when Freese and Garvin won their 100 free events, and Altman and Kretzer won the 200 back. Flick and Schilling won their 200 breast events, while Faas and Bauer won their 500 free competitions. Lauren Reed moved into the fifth spot on the 100 fly list by winning the race in 58.78 seconds, and Kretzer took the event on the men's side.
Colgate won the women's three-meter dive, though Sarah Petcavage totaled a seventh-best all-time 235.20 points. Jake Thompson won the event on the men's side with a ninth-best 241.64 points. The Raiders won their last event of the night when Alice Garnett and Meghan Binder edged out Laura Goeller for a victory in the 200 IM. At that point, Bucknell had clinched the meet and declared its entrants as exhibitions, giving Colgate the remaining points on the afternoon. John Hoffman finished fastest in the men's 200 IM, and Bucknell's relay teams won the 400 free relays despite ceding the points to the Raiders.
Bucknell will have next weekend off, as a previously scheduled meet at George Washington was called off due to unforeseen scheduling conflicts, but the Bison will swim again on Jan. 31 versus Lafayette, its last home dual meet of the year and next-to-last home meet. Bucknell will host five Patriot League teams on Feb. 14 in its last meet before the Feb. 26-28 Patriot League Championships at Navy.
