LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman forward Jennifer Margolis tallied her second-straight game-winning-goal just 3:38 into overtime as the Bucknell women's soccer team prevailed over Marist, 3-2, in the home opener for the Bison on Sunday, September 7. Margolis also put the Orange and Blue on the board in the game's 72nd minute.
Marist started the game on a surge, taking a shot just 26 seconds into the contest. That was the only shot the Red Foxes would get off in the opening half, however, as Bucknell entered the break in a scoreless tie with an 8-1 edge in shots.
The second half went much the same way for the first 25 minutes before the Bucknell offense started to threaten Marist. With 72:58 gone in the game, junior Michelle Santonacita crossed the ball to a waiting Margolis, who effortlessly headed it into the back right corner of the net for a 1-0 Bison lead. It was short-lived, however, as the Red Foxes took the ensuing start into Bucknell territory and secured a corner kick. Just 36 seconds after the BU score, Courtney Moore capitalized on a bobbled ball in front of the net to tie the contest.
Freshman Shannon Curd put the host team back ahead with the first goal of her career at the 78:15 mark. Sophomore Suzanne Arata crossed the ball from the right side to sophomore Lexi Shore, who one touched it to Curd for the score.
Marist again responded when Tara Savidge beat the Bucknell defense on a scramble after a direct kick with just 5:31 left in the game.
For the second-straight game, the Bison headed to overtime. And for the second-straight game, Margolis delivered the game-winner, heading in junior Ashley Dincher's cross from the right side just 3:38 into the extra session.
BU held an 18-5 shot advantage in the contest, while holding a 10-2 edge in corner kicks. Marist goalkeeper Danielle Cibelli made five saves for the Red Foxes. Freshman Katie Dry, making her first career start, stopped one shot for Bucknell.
The Bison improve to 3-0 overall and remain home to host Cornell in a 4:30 p.m. game on Wednesday, September 10. Marist falls to 0-2 on the year.
