WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Bucknell junior Jonathan Hemmert converted on a penalty kick in the 36th minute of play to tally the lone goal of the match, staking the Bison to a 1-0 win over Monmouth in men's soccer action on Sunday, September 28. The victory improves BU's record to 5-4-0 overall, while the Hawks fall to 1-5-1 on the year.
Bucknell controlled the pace of the game in the opening stanza, outshooting Monmouth 7-1. The Orange and Blue generated a quality scoring opportunity in the 15th minute as sophomore Tim Faneck rocketed a shot at Monmouth goalkeeper Art Satterwhite. The rebound found junior Ori Adrabi's head, but his flick slid wide of the goal.
The Bison attacked the Hawk's goal again in the 30th minute as sophomore Scott Visnic found senior Chris Beekman across the field. Beekman's volley, however, was saved by Satterwhite. Minutes later, Beekman was taken down in the box and Bucknell was awarded a penalty kick. Hemmert, who has scored two of his four career goals on penalty kicks, was selected to take the shot. He put the ball past Satterwhite with just under 10 minutes left in the first half for the 1-0 lead.
The Hawks generated four shots in the second half, with the best scoring opportunity coming in the 62nd minute when Nick Randazzo served a corner kick that found Joe Sellitto on the far end line. Sellitto's cross found John Carrozza, whose header was saved off the line by a Bison defender.
The Orange and Blue outshot Monmouth, 15-5, in the match. Satterwhite finished the game with five saves, while Bucknell goalkeeper Adam Edwards stopped three shots. With the shutout, Edwards moves into the Patriot League's top-10 list for career shutouts with 14 in less than two seasons. He is currently tied for ninth on the list.
Bucknell returns to action on Saturday, October 4, when it travels to Colgate for a 4:00 p.m. conference game against the Raiders. The contest is the fifth of six-straight road games for BU.
