PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Senior Chris Beekman staked Bucknell to a 1-0 lead that lasted the final 33 minutes of the first half before host Pittsburgh rattled off three unanswered scores in a 15 minute span, and the Panthers survived a late surge by the Bison for a 3-2 win in non-conference men's soccer action on Wednesday, October 8.
Beekman tallied in the 12th minute when he took advantage of a defensive miscue and converted a one on one situation to give Bucknell a 1-0 lead. That score would stand until just 44 seconds into the second half, when the Panthers offense kicked in.
Keeyan Young got Pittsburgh on the board at the 45:44 mark when Brendon Smith found him in front of the net for the finish. Less than five minutes later, Bryan Headrick put a pass from Johnathan Crow past Bison goalkeeper Adam Edwards. Shawn Wildman, who crossed the ball to start the play, was also credited with an assist. The Panthers made it a 3-1 game with Tyler Bastianelli finished a pass from Headrick with 60:17 gone in the game.
Sophomore Scott Visnic tallied his league leading eighth goal of the season, marking his eighth score in the last eight games, just over two minutes after Pittsburgh's final score, but it was too little, too late, as the Panthers held on for the 3-2 victory.
The host team held a slight 9-8 edge in shots, while Bucknell held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. Edwards made one save for the Bison and Pittsburgh keeper Justin Lowery made two stops.
Bucknell falls to 6-5-0 overall. The Orange and Blue return to Patriot League play on Saturday, October 11, when they host Lafayette for a critical conference match at 2:00 p.m. Pittsburgh improves to 4-8-0 overall.
