Berthod Ties Bucknell All-Time Career Singles Wins Record as Bison Women Beat Delaware

Lewisburg, Pa. - Senior Samantha Berthod won her 50th singles match at Bucknell, tying Kristina Lutter '94 for the all-time record as she and her teammates defeated Delaware, 6-1.
The Bison swept doubles play as Veronica Brown and Tanya Sichko beat Elizabeth Perlow and Sari Shuster on court one, 8-5, while Berthod and Rheanna Gaskin beat Marissa Singer and Beth Principe, 8-2 on court two, and Rebecca Kral and Chelsea Mills beat Jamie deGraffenreid and Jennifer Lamberton, 8-3. In exhibiton play, Kelly Porter and Kristen Pugno beat Delaware's Stefanie Riddle and Julia Shapiro, 8-6.
Berthod's record-tying win came over deGraffenreid, 6-0, 6-1, on court four as one of five singles matches the Bison won on the afternoon. Brown beat Singer, 6-0, 6-2 on court one, while Gaskin beat Shuster, 6-2, 6-0 on court three and Mills beat Shapiro, 6-1, 6-1 on court five. In the last match to finish a competition that took approximately four-and-a-half hours to complete, Kral beat Principe, 7-5, 4-6, (10-1) on court six. Delaware picked up a point on court two when Sichko fell to Perlow, 6-2, 6-4.
On the men's side, Joe Menezes improved to 8-0 in singles by squeaking out a 7-6(5), 7-6(5) victory over Delaware's Josh Ditman on court four as one of two singles matches the Bison won over the Blue Hens, dropping the overall match, 4-3. Matt Pikus was Bucknell's other winner, beating Philip Wayne, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 on court six.
Asher Salam was the last Bison on the court in a match that ended up tipping the win to Delaware. Sanjay Khindri's win clinched the team victory for Delaware, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(4). Other Blue Hen wins came on court one, where John Tully beat Nick Denefrio, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, as well as on court three, where Gerald DiChiara fell to Adam Liebman, 7-5, 6-4, and on court five, where Aaron Saperstein lost to Mike Riisen, 7-6(5), 6-4.
Bucknell won the doubles point, necessitating Delaware's four singles wins to take the match. On court one, Denefrio and Pikus beat Tully and Khindri, 9-7, while Salam and Menezes beat Ditman and Ari Zweig, 8-4 on court two. DiChiara and Don Whaley beat Riisen and Mike Austin, 8-6 on court three. In exhibition play, Brian Cohen and Dave Eckelberger of Bucknell beat Liebman and Wayne, 8-6.
The Bucknell men will take a trip to Pittsburgh next weekend where they will face Duquesne on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 10 a.m. and Robert Morris on Sunday at 10 a.m. The Bison women will compete in the ECAC Tournament on Saturday and Sunday at Army.
