OLEAN, N.Y. - After entering final-round play at the Keenan Invitational in a five-way tie for third place, and with three other teams lurking just behind, the Bucknell men's golf team slid seven spots to finish in 10th place, despite just a five-stroke difference from its first-round score.
The Bison shot 309 Monday after totaling 304 in Sunday's opening round, but six of the teams in that leaderboard logjam improved their scores as Bucknell fell to 10th place. Host St. Bonaventure made up a three-shot deficit on first-round leader Duquesne and defeated the Dukes in a playoff. Both teams shot 595 for the tournament.
Siena, whose 292 Monday was the low round of the tourney, placed third, one shot out of the playoff. Seton Hall (604), Niagara (608), Cornell (609), Loyola (609), Rider (609), Drexel (612) and Bucknell (613) rounded out the top 10 in a 14-team field.
Senior Abbie Valentine shot 77 on Monday after an opening-round 72 and finished in a three-way tie for 13th place at 149. Junior Alex Dolle and freshman Kyle Moran led the Bison with 76s over the final 18 holes. Moran finished in 33rd place at 154, while Dolle totaled 157.
Freshman Charlie Waddell shot 80 and sophomore Tom Lane finished with 81, ending Bucknell's run of four straight rounds without counting a score in the 80s.
Josh Anderson of St. Bonaventure captured medallist honors, finishing at one-under 139. He won by four shots over Seton Hall's Scott Sanderson. First-round leader Eric Couture of Saint Francis (Pa.), who shot 67 on Sunday, finished with 79 to slip into a tie for third place.
The Bison are back in action next Saturday and Sunday at the Cornell Invitational.
