LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's soccer team ended a three-game home stand with a 2-1 record after defeating Howard 3-0 on Friday afternoon. Freshman Jennifer Margolis scored what would prove to be the game-winner for her fourth straight game with at least one point.
The Orange and Blue dominated the game offensively, out shooting the visitors 22-7 and holding a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks. It wasn't until the 33:50 mark of the first half, however, that BU found the back of the net.
Junior Ashley Dincher crossed the ball from the right side of the field, just past Howard goalkeeper Lindsay Walton. Margolis was waiting on the left post, and drove the ball into the back of net for her fifth score of the season. With 11 points on the year, Margolis becomes the highest scoring rookie for Bucknell since Kristie Simon and Savannah Rennels had 25 and 19 points, respectively, in 2000.
The Bison held the 1-0 lead for the first 13 minutes of the second half before sophomore Rachel Prowler tallied her first of the season. With 58:37 gone in the game, Prowler headed a shot into Walton's arms, but got a foot on the deflection to put Bucknell ahead 2-0.
Sophomore Suzanne Arata added an insurance goal with less than seven minutes to go in the game for her first goal of the year. Classmate Kerry Fitz-Patrick carried the ball down the left side of the field before sending a cross in front of the net that Arata delivered on for a 3-0 score.
Walton finished the game with eight saves for Howard. Sophomore Samantha Hecht played the first half for Bucknell, registering one save. Freshman Katie Dry made one stop in the second half for the Bison.
Bucknell improves to 4-1-0 overall. The Orange and Blue travel to Penn State for a 7:00 p.m. game against the Nittany Lions on Wednesday, September 17, before returning home to host Colgate in the first Patriot League contest of the year on Saturday, September 20, at 2:30 p.m.
Howard falls to 1-4-0 overall.
