LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman Charlie Waddell fired a one-over-par 71 in his first collegiate round to help the Bucknell golf team take the first-round lead at its own Bucknell Invitational, which began Friday at the Bucknell University Golf Club.
Alex Dolle and Abbie Valentine shot matching 72s and Tom Lane carded a 78 to account for the Bison's team total of 293. That score is one shot better than Cornell, two ahead of Loyola (Md.) and four clear of Patriot League rival Lehigh.
Mount St. Mary's, at 298, rounds out the top five in the 19-team field. Local rival Susquehanna is in 14th place after shooting 311 on Friday.
Andrew Hill of Mount St. Mary's grabbed the individual lead with a one-under 69. Four players are one shot back.
Bucknell's "Blue" team also had a fine opening round, finishing at 308, good for a tie for 11th place. Charles Wagner carded a three-over 73 to lead the Blue squad, followed by Patrick Yingling at 77, Kyle Moran at 78, Charles Markey at 80 and Ryan Hom at 86.
The second and final round of the tournament is slated for Saturday morning, with a 10 a.m. shotgun start.
