LEWISBURG, Pa. - The 2003 Bucknell men's soccer season got off to a rough start as the Bison dropped a 1-0 decision to visiting Hartwick on Saturday, August 30. The Orange and Blue received three yellow cards in the contest, and had two players ejected.
The first half was a back and forth battle with neither team dominating the field of play. Defense was the name of the game, with the first shot coming nearly twelve minutes into the contest when Bucknell sophomore Scott Visnic almost snuck a ball past Hartwick goalkeeper Josh Wagenaar. The two teams ended the first 45 minutes in a 0-0 tie with both squads taking two shots.
BU's offense picked up the momentum in the early stages of the second half, pressuring the Hawks defense for the first 15 minutes of the frame. The energy shifted Hartwick's way, however, in the 60th minute of play when Bucknell lost last year's leading scorer, junior Jonathan Hemmert, to a red card.
The Bison were forced to play the final 30 minutes of the contest a man down, allowing Hartwick several scoring opportunities. The Hawks finally capitalized in the 82nd minute when senior Derrek Krasnicki crossed a ball that found the foot of senior Greg Victor, who found the back of the net at 81:09.
Bucknell could only get one shot off the rest of the contest, and Hartwick held on for the 1-0 victory.
The loss snapped a streak of eight-straight undefeated games on BU's home field.
Bucknell drops to 0-1 while Hartwick moves to 1-0. The Orange and Blue are in action again next on Saturday, September 6, for a 3:00 p.m. game at Duquesne.
