LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior Amy Jones broke 80 for the first time since her freshman year, carding a career-best and tournament-low 76 Saturday to lead the Bison to a second-place standing after the first of two rounds of the Bucknell Spring Classic.
Bucknell, which has finished third and second in its own tournament in each of the last two seasons, overcame cold and windy conditions to record a team score of 323, matching the fifth-best in the five-year history of the program. The Bison trail first-round leader Saint Francis (Pa.) by just three shots heading into Sunday's final round, where more chilly temperatures are predicted.
The Bison are two strokes clear of Harvard and three ahead of Brown. Long Island (332), Dartmouth (340), Cleveland State (343), Wagner (350), St. Mary's (Ind.) (350), Monmouth (363), Central Connecticut (368), Lehigh (368), Kutztown (395) and McDaniel (396) round out the first-round standings.
Jones was the only Bison player to shoot in the 70s on Saturday. Her six-over-par 76 was the second-lowest round in school history, behind only Jaime Hays' 74 at Yale last September. It was Jones' best score since her 78 in the final round of the Rutgers Invitational in 1999.
Four individuals are two shots behind Jones in the medallist race - Kathy Birehall of Dartmouth, Kristen Obush of Cleveland State, Michele Raymond of Saint Francis and 2001 tournament champion Elizabeth Carpenter of Brown.
Supporting Jones' stellar round for Bucknell were classmates Jess Hetrich and Molly Campbell, who each shot 80. Hays finished in 87 and freshman Kelly Evans carded a 93. Hetrich won this tournament in 2002.
Round two is slated to begin Sunday morning with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start. Bucknell has never won a team tournament title.
