Bucknell Baseball Completes Four-Game Sweep of Lafayette

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell baseball team completed a four-game series sweep of Lafayette with two victories, 2-1 and 8-5, on Monday. The Bison (25-12, 15-5 PL) knocked the Leopards (12-20, 7-12 PL) out of contention for the third place slot in the Patriot League Tournament. Bucknell clinched the number one seed on Sunday.
In game one, Bucknell grabbed an early lead in the second inning. Brian Day's triple to center field drove in Kyle Walter to take the 1-0 lead. Phil Bunting's ground ball to shortstop allowed Day to score.
In the fifth, the Leopards drove in one run on four hits. Jeff Rodgers' RBI single provided Lafayette's lone win.
The Bison added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Brian Hirschberg was plated by Ben Krentzman's single up the middle to make it 3-1.
Zach Allen (6-2) pitched five innings, giving up six hits and one earned run. Matt Daley replaced Allen in the sixth and recorded his fifth save of the season. Daley pitched two innings, allowing two hits.
In the nightcap, the Bison had a hitting battle with the Leopards. In the first, Lafayette scored its first run when Rodgers was plated on Adam Bucci's single through the right side.
Bucknell answered with four runs in the bottom of the first. Matt Capece was forced home after Steve Stutzman walked with bases loaded. Chris Grandizio, Walter and Stutzman scored on a double hit by Krentzman, as the Bison took a 4-1 lead.
The Leopards scored one earned and three unearned runs in the top of the second. Jason Boyd and Adam Rosenberg hit back-to-back doubles scoring two runners. The Leopards recovered a 5-4 lead.
In the fourth inning, Walter hit his third home run of the season, plating Capece and Dave Garrisi, capturing a 7-5 lead for the Bison. The Orange and Blue secured the win with a run in the sixth inning, after Brad Duvall drove Walter in with a double.
Senior pitcher Kevin Burns received his fifth win of the season, after giving up five runs, two earned, on nine hits. The right-handed pitcher struck out three Leopards. Cory Nadler replaced Burns in the sixth inning, giving up one hit. Phil Futrick took the mound in the seventh inning and added to his record total with his 11th save of the season after giving up only one hit.
The Bison return to Depew Field on Tuesday, April 29 to host a non-conference final regular season game against George Washington. The first pitch of the single game will be delivered at 3 p.m.
