PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Suzanne Raffaele scored five times in her final regular-season game, but it was not enough as the Bison dropped an 11-9 decision at Drexel in women's lacrosse action on Tuesday, April 22. The Orange and Blue wrapped up the regular-season at 7-7 overall.
Play was fairly even in the first half, with each team matching the other goal-for-goal. The Bison got on the board first when Raffaele notched her first at 22:49. Drexel's Colleen Rocks answered with the Dragons' first goal just 12 seconds later. DU's Katrina Rand netted an unassisted goal at 20:03, before Chrissy Sheehan put Drexel up 3-1 with her score at 19:53.
BU got back in it when Cora Preston notched her first of the game with 19:37 to go in the first half, and Amy Hasler then took a feed from Meredith Wright with 11:26 to play to tie it 3-3. Caterina Carafides gave the host team a one-goal cushion on her goal, assisted by Jamie Connahan, at 9:23, but Raffaele responded a minute later to knot it again. Carafides and Connahan teamed up to score another goal at 7:54, only to have Raffaele notch two more before the half was out, making it 6-5 at halftime.
Preston opened up the second half scoring with a free position goal just four minutes in to the second to put Bucknell up by two. Kristyn Minnick cut the lead in half with an unassisted goal at 22:43, but Raffaele tallied her fifth of the game at 21:33. Rocks started a Dragon five-goal scoring run at 18:07, and Drexel took the lead for good on Carafides fourth goal of the game with 6:18 to play. Nicole Kallis made six stops in net for BU, while Shirley Sarker made 13 saves for Drexel.
With her five goals, Raffaele increased her career total to 138, just three away from setting a Bucknell career scoring record.
The Bison will be participating in the Patriot League Tournament for the first time in school history. BU, the third seed, will face second-seeded Colgate in the 3:00 p.m. game on Saturday, April 26.
