LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell got a season-high four goals from sophomore Meg Blitzer, while scoring a season-best 19 goals in a 19-3 win over Washington & Jefferson on Saturday, April 12. The two teams squared off in the second round of the Southern Division Championship, being held in Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium this weekend.
The Bison jumped out to a 7-0 lead after one quarter and never looked back. Sophomore Cody Keffer tossed in one of her two goals on the day with just 1:21 gone in the contest for the 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, junior Kelly Hofstetter made it 2-0 with her unassisted score at the 3:49 mark. After a W&J steal, Hofstetter took the ball right back and took advantage of goalkeeper Kelly Skubick being out of position for the score.
Exactly one minute later, Keffer made it 3-0, taking a pass from sophomore Larissa Brown. Brown then tallied her own just :30 later, capitalizing on a penalty shot for the 4-0 advantage. The Orange and Blue scored three goals in the final 1:30 of the first quarter for the 7-0 lead after one. Blitzer tallied twice, while sophomore Ashley Aiken put one on the board.
The Washington & Jefferson defense settled in during the second quarter, holding the Bison to just one score, while putting in two of its own. Sarah Denny got the Presidents on the board with her goal 1:01 into the second period. Deidre Sandrock made it a 7-2 game with her four-meter shot with 2:46 to play until halftime, before sophomore Eileen Ketterer got one of those back with her unassisted score with just seven seconds remaining.
Bucknell picked up the intensity again in the second half, outscoring W&J 11-1 in the final two quarters. The Bison scored the first four goals of the third period, including two each from Blitzer and freshman Jennifer Meitzner.
The fourth quarter was all BU as the host team outscored Washington & Jefferson 6-0 in the final frame. Freshman Christina Behrens got her first goal of the game in the quarter, as did senior Jamie Fulop, junior Daniela Faas and freshman Vanessa Scaringi. Ketterer tallied twice in the frame, including a four-meter penalty shot.
Senior Lindsay Chesterfield started the game in net, stopping four shots and allowing two goals. Freshman Meg Fulop played the second half, making four saves and allowing just one score. Skubick made seven saves for the Presidents.
Bucknell is 11-14 overall. The Orange and Blue will face Slippery Rock at 4:30 p.m. Washington & Jefferson falls to 4-8 overall.
