LEWISBURG, Pa. - It took six extra minutes, but the Bucknell women's water polo team finally came away with the victory against Villanova, defeating the Wildcats 9-8 in overtime at the Southern Division Championship, held in Lewisburg this weekend. With the win, the Bison take fifth at the event.
The Orange and Blue opened the scoring with two quick extra man goals. Meg Blitzer took a pass from Cody Keffer just 29 seconds into the contest for the first score. Keffer then set up Kaitlin Bardoe 2:31 later for a 2-0 lead.
The Wildcats responded with two goals of their own, before Keffer scored on a pass from Blitzer to put the Bison back on top, 3-2. Villanova's Chesed Ceniseroz knotted the contest to end the first quarter when she drove home Maria Greshock's pass in a 6-on-5 opportunity.
An Ellen Howe score just 40 seconds into the second quarter gave Villanova its first lead of the contest, but the Orange and Blue came charging back with three unanswered to regain control. Keffer scored on a Bardoe pass with 5:18 to play before halftime, and then hooked up with Blitzer again to tally at the 4:33 mark. A desperation shot by Larissa Brown with time expiring in the first half snuck over Denise Hanes' head, and that score would prove crucial in the second stanza.
The third quarter was a defensive battle for both teams with neither scoring in the frame.
After Katie Stahler's backhanded goal 14 seconds into the fourth quarter made it 7-4, the Bison offense went quiet again. Starting with a Howe goal with 3:31 to play, Villanova scored on three straight possessions to tie the contest 7-7 with 1:18 to go. Keffer had a chance at the game-winner with three seconds remaining, but Hanes made a critical save to send the game to overtime.
The Orange and Blue got on the board first in the extra session when Stahler scored on a near identical goal to her first with just 23 ticks gone in the frame. With 32 seconds left in the first three-minute period, Hanes was ejected and a 4-Meter shot was awarded to the Bison. The ensuing shot was high and wide, but the Bucknell defense held the Wildcats without a goal to enter the second three-minute period with the 8-7 lead.
With 1:17 to play, Keffer tallied her fourth of the contest, taking a pass from Bardoe, to give BU a two-goal cushion. Villanova's Kimberley Pare forced in a deflection off of Howe's shot with 26 seconds left to get the Wildcats within one, 9-8, but the Bison were able to run out the clock to hold on for the win.
Bucknell is 13-14 overall, claiming fifth in the Championship. The Bison will find out on Monday if they have earned an at-large bid to the Eastern Championship. Villanova falls to 10-17.
