WORCESTER, Mass. - In week one of Patriot League play, the Bucknell baseball team finished 3-1 after splitting a pair with Holy Cross on Monday in a makeup of Sunday's rained out doubleheader at Fitton Field. The Bison came back from a 6-0 deficit to win game one, 8-6, and the Orange and Blue fell 5-1 in game two.
The Bison, who swept the Crusaders in Saturday's doubleheader, were held scoreless in game one in the first three innings, while Holy Cross plated four runs in the first inning and two in the third to create a 6-0 lead. Bucknell's comeback began in the fourth inning, when Brian Day walked and Brian Hirschberg singled to left field, advancing Day to second. Austin Barrett singled down the left line to load the bases. Ben Krentzman singled through the right side plating Day and Hirschberg to closed the gap to 6-2.
Holy Cross starting pitcher Drew Bigda struck out Kyle Walter and Pete Wolf, but then allowed two runs to score on a strange sequence. With runners at second and third, Bigda threw a wild pitch, allowing Barrett to score, and Bigda's throwing error on the play allowed Krentzman to score all the way from second to make it 6-4.
In the sixth inning, Barrett doubled to right field to begin four-run rally. Krentzman singled and Barrett advanced to third on the hit. Wolf walked and then Walter reached first on an error by the second baseman, moving Krentzman to second and while Barrett crossed home plate. One out later, Ben Stoll singled off reliever Jason Lynch, advancing Stutzman to third and plating Walter and Wolf with the tying and go-ahead runs. After Sam Moss reached on an infield hit, Bucknell added an insurance run when Day was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Zach Allen gave up six runs, four earned, on seven hits in five innings. Allen struck out seven Crusaders. Cory Nadler pitched one inning allowing two hits. Freshman Phil Futrick worked the seventh and picked up his second save of the series and fourth of the season.
Krentzman went 4-for-4 in game one against Holy Cross, while both Moss and Barrett went 2-for-4. Krentzman and Barrett each recorded a double.
In game two, Bucknell took the lead in the second inning. Hirschberg led off with a home run to right field to score the Bison's only run of the game. The Crusaders scored three runs on three consecutive doubles and a single in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead, 3-1. Holy Cross then grabbed one more run off starter Kevin Burns before Matt Daley was summoned from the bullpen. HC plated one run while Daley was on the mound for a 5-1 finish.
Burns gave up five runs on eight hits in four plus innings. Daley only gave up two hits two innings.
Hirschberg went 2-for-4 in game two, including his fourth homer of the season.
Bucknell's match-up against Penn State, scheduled for Tuesday, April 1, has been postponed due to field conditions. A make-up date is still to be determined. The Bison are scheduled to play Navy in Annapolis, Md. for a four-game series on April 4 and 5.
