LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell baseball (18-9) team split a mid-week doubleheader with Duquesne (18-17) on Wednesday. The Bison fell in the opener 15-3, but came back to win the nightcap, 6-4. Nick Yaeger tallied the loss in game one, while Cory Nadler picked up his first win of the season in game two. Tim Peacock received his first save in the 6-4 win.
In the first game, the Bison fell behind the Dukes in the first inning after two costly errors led to a pair of unearned runs. The Bison tried to make a comeback in the bottom of the first but left runners stranded on second and third.
In the second inning, the Dukes scored one run to take a 3-0 lead, but the Bison rallied to tie in the bottom of that frame. After Pete Wolf was hit by a pitch, Kyle Walter doubled to right center. Phil Bunting grounded out and received an RBI as Wolf crossed the plate. B.J. Batterson, was then hit by a pitch from Duquesne's Eduardo Vivoni and Chris Grandizio beat out a double play ball to plate Walter. The Bison tied the game at three when Grandizio scored on a passed ball.
Duquense pounded the Bison for 12 more runs in the next five innings. Marc Cussatt relieved Yeager and pitched three innings and gave up two runs on four hits. Jon Black pitched one inning, giving up six runs on five hits. Eric Steinbach closed for the Bison pitching one inning allowing only one run on four hits. John Smith received the win for the Dukes and owns a 1-1 record.
Walter hit a team-best 2-for-3 in game one, including one double.
Bucknell bounced back in game two and earned a 6-4 victory. The Dukes used a single, double and triple to score three runs in the first inning. The Orange and Blue began the bottom of the first with a double hit by Ben Stoll. He then advanced to third on a sacrifice by Matt Capece. Brian Day grounded out to second to score Stoll with BU's first run.
A five-run third inning gave the Bison the lead for good. Stoll started the rally with a double to left field and then advanced to third on a error by the leftfielder. Stoll then scored on a passed ball to cut the gap to 3-2. Capese singled, then advanced to second on a wild pitch by Duquesne hurler Travis Rife. Brian Hirschberg then tripled into right field, allowing Capese to score the tying run. Ben Krentzman was hit by pitch and Walter continued his fine afternoon with a home run over the right field wall to gain the 6-3 lead.
The Dukes scored one last run in the top of the sixth.
Stoll and Austin Barrett both went 2-for-3 in game two. Stoll grabbed two doubles, and Barrett tallied one.
Nadler pitched 5.1 innings for the Bison, giving up four runs, three earned, on four hits. Tim Peacock replaced Nadler in the sixth inning and finished the game with a clean slate.
Bucknell will host a Patriot League opponent for the first time this season when Army comes to Lewisburg for a four-game series on April 19-20. Both doubleheaders are slated to begin at noon.
