LEWISBURG, Pa. - Andrew Copelan, a 2003 Bucknell graduate and a standout midfielder for the Bison men's lacrosse team for the last four years, recently became the youngest Division I head coach when Marist College director of athletics Tim Murray named him interim head coach earlier this month.
Copelan, who is working toward a graduate degree at the Poughkeepsie, N.Y., school, had served as an assistant coach since the beginning of Marist's fall season, but was elevated to the interim head position on Dec. 4. He becomes the youngest Division I head coach in the nation.
"I have a lot of confidence in Andy and his ability to lead our men's lacrosse program," said Murray. "Andy had had a very important impact to our lacrosse program in the short time he has been with us."
Copelan was a key member of Bucknell's all-senior No. 1 midfield line last spring, when he nearly doubled his previous scoring high with 29 points on 11 goals and 18 assists. He managed one of the team's most important goals of the season, netting the tiebreaker with just over a minute to play in a one-goal win over Hobart.
He earned All-Patriot League honors for the first time in 2003, was an alternate for the North-South game, and was a four-year member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
The Red Foxes finished 3-5 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and 3-12 overall last season.
Bucknell finished the 2003 campaign with a 9-4 record (5-1 PL) and tied with Army for the Patriot League regular season title. It was Bucknell's fourth straight PL title and fifth overall.
