LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior Desire Almind, junior Brooke Tomovich and freshman Lindsey Hollobaugh combined for 57 of Bucknell's 69 points as the Bison women's basketball squad picked up its first victory of the 2003-04 season with a 69-64 win over Coppin State on Sunday, November 30.
The Orange and Blue jumped out to an early 10-6 lead behind seven-straight points from Tomovich just four minutes into the game. Coppin State tied the contest 12-12 with 12:26 to go in the opening half, but the Bison responded with an 11-0 run to take a 23-12 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining. Hollobaugh chipped in seven points during the run, while the other four came from Almind.
The Lady Eagles slowly chipped away at the Bucknell lead and actually regained the advantage on a jumper by Sherrie Tucker with 6:17 to play in the frame. A three-point play by Almind 13 seconds later put BU back on top 26-25, but Coppin State took advantage of seven Bison turnovers to outscore the host team 12-7 over the final 6:04 of the first half and take a 37-33 lead into the intermission. The Lady Eagles committed only four miscues in the opening half.
Coppin State went ahead 39-33 on a Courtni Strickland jumper 1:16 into the second half, but the Orange and Blue answered with a 9-4 run to get back within one, 43-42, with 14:57 left in the game. The Lady Eagles got three points from Denita Plain sandwiched between four Talia Sutton points over the next three minutes to key a 7-0 run that put CSC back on top, 50-42, for its largest lead of the game.
Down eight with 12:03 to play, the Bison slowly began to cut into the Coppin State lead, outscoring the visitors 13-2 over nearly a seven minute span to regain the lead for the first time since late in the first half. Antoinette Reese snapped a four minute scoreless drought for the Lady Eagles with her jumper at the 5:20 mark to make it a one-point game, but that was as close as Coppin State would get the rest of the way.
Bucknell pushed its lead to as many as nine in the final three minutes, and led by eight, 66-58 with just under a minute to play before two quick three-pointers by Reese made it a three-point ball game. Junior Laura Hatalsky was fouled with seven tenths of a second left in the contest and made both free throws for the final of 69-64.
The Bison, who were outrebounded 25-22 in the opening half, finished the game with a 50-42 edge, setting a new Sojka Pavilion team rebounding record. Almind pulled in 18 boards to go with her game-high 23 points, also establishing a Sojka Pavilion single-game individual record.
Hollobaugh finished the game with 19 points and 10 rebounds for her first career double-double, while Tomovich added 15 markers and pulled in eight boards. Junior Lillian Drumgold came off the bench to score five points and grab a career-best eight rebounds for the Bison.
LaKesha Wills and Reese led Coppin State with 13 points each, while Leisel Harry was the team's high-rebounder with 11 caroms.
Bucknell improves to 1-2 overall. The Orange and Blue close out a three game homestand with Bowling Green on Wednesday, December 3, at 7:00 p.m. Coppin State falls to 1-2 overall.
