LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sophomore Lauren Troupe scored a career-high 22 points, and visiting Loyola (Md.) took advantage of cold shooting by the Bison in the first half on its way to a 56-46 victory in women's basketball action on Tuesday, November 25.
Bucknell shot just .280 (21-52) in the opening frame, falling into a 14-point halftime deficit. Both teams were sluggish to start, combining for just 15 points in the first five minutes of the contest. With the score tied at 11-11 with 11:47 to go in the half, the Greyhounds put together a 9-0 run, including four points from Troupe, to jump out to a 20-11 lead.
A jumper by freshman Lindsey Hollobaugh and a layup by junior Brooke Tomovich cut the score to 20-15 under two minutes later, but that would be the last score of the half for BU. Loyola went on to outscore the Orange and Blue 9-0 over the final 8:27 of the stanza for a 29-15 halftime edge.
The Bison turned it on in the second half, outscoring the Greyhounds, 31-27, and improving from the field to shoot a sizzling .519 (14-27), but the effort came a bit too late as the 14-point halftime deficit was insurmountable.
Loyola led by as many as 18 points early in the second half before Bucknell started to chip away at the lead. Hollobaugh jump started a 13-4 run by the Orange and Blue which spanned over five minutes to get it back to a nine-point game, 47-38, but the Greyhounds' Jill Henn promptly hit a three-pointer to push it back to a double-digit lead. Bucknell cut it to nine three more times in the final five minutes, but could not find a stop for the Loyola offense.
Senior Desire Almind had an impressive second half for the Bison, scoring all 12 of her points in the frame and pulling in 10 rebounds in the half to finish the game with her first double-double of the year with 12 points and 12 caroms. Also in double-figures scoring were Tomovich and Hollobaugh with 15 and 10 points, respectively. The 15 points are a career-best for Tomovich, a transfer from Loyola (Md.) who sat out last year per NCAA rules.
Bucknell ended the contest shooting .404 (21-52), while the Greyhounds were just 21-64 from the field for a .328 clip. The story, however, was turnovers. The Bison committed 25 turnovers to just nine for Loyola.
The Orange and Blue are 0-2 on the year and host Coppin State on Sunday, November 30, for the second of three-straight home games. Loyola improves to 1-1 overall.
