Lewisburg, Pa. - The Bucknell field hockey team returned to its winning ways on Saturday afternoon at Georgetown, beating the Hoyas 4-2. Following the program's first 7-1 start since 1975, the Bison snapped a three-game skid with today's win. Freshman Callista Costopoulos, who served as Bucknell's penalty corner shooter for the first time for much of today's game, had two goals on corners while Kelly O'Brien and Kate Ruda, the top two scorers for the Bison on the year, had a goal each.
Ruda's unassisted goal opened the scoring 15:55 into the first half, and Bucknell maintained the lead until Leeanne Rizzo had her first of two goals for the Hoyas. Off a pass from Beth Gagnon, Rizzo found the back of the cage before Bucknell goalie Liz Jordan recovered from a previous save.
Costopoulos' first goal, off a penalty corner from Ruda and Lindsey Gentel, came with :59 left on the clock in the first half, sending the Bison into the break ahead 2-1.
O'Brien's goal came on a penalty stroke as she was tripped up by a Hoya player while charging the net. The Bucknell sophomore converted 7:23 into the second half, putting the Bison up 3-1. Rizzo answered with her second goal, this one unassisted, just under five minutes later. A tense back-and-forth ensued as the Hoyas attempted to close the 3-2 gap, but with just under 10 minutes to go in the game, Costopoulos scored on another penalty corner, again from Ruda and Gentel, cementing the Bucknell win.
Jordan had five saves on Georgetown's 15 shots, while Abby Winer had eight saves for the Hoyas on Bucknell's 18 shots.
The Bison will face their toughest test of the year, according to the NFHCA/STX collegiate field hockey rankings, when they visit No. 8 Penn State for their next game on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. The next conference match for Bucknell after two weekends off from league play will be at Fairfield on Saturday, Oct. 25.
