TOWSON, Md. - The Bucknell field hockey team finally had some overtime magic of its own at Towson on Tuesday night, knocking off the Tigers, 3-2. Earlier this month, Bucknell lost at La Salle, 2-1 in the second round of penalty strokes following two overtime periods, and last weekend, the Bison lost a 1-0 decision at Fairfield in the first overtime period.
Kelly O'Brien provided the game winner in overtime, and Kirsten Nilsen had Bucknell's two goals in regulation, scoring for the first time since Sept. 30 in Bucknell's 6-2 deluge of St. Francis (Pa.). Nilsen's first goal came with just over nine minutes to go in the first half off a penalty corner from Callista Costopoulos. Bucknell took the one-goal advantage into the break and held Towson until the 54th minute when Brandi Franks scored to tie the game on a penalty corner. Bucknell answered just over two minutes later with Nilsen's second goal, which was unassisted.
The Bison held their 2-1 advantage until Julie Lambi of Towson scored with five-and-a-half minutes left in the game from Jessica Burkhardt. O'Brien's game winner came just 1:39 into overtime with an assist credited to Lindsey Gentel. The goal gives O'Brien the team scoring lead with nine on the season, breaking a tie with Kate Ruda.
Bucknell took 13 shots, resulting in six saves by Towson goalie Loren Wolf. Towson had nine shots, resulting in six saves for Liz Jordan. Towson won the penalty corner battle, 10-8.
The Bison will be in action again on Saturday, November 1 at 12:00 p.m. against the Patriot League's front runners, American. It will be a special day for the Bison, as the game will not only be a homecoming for American assistant coach and former Bucknell four-year goalkeeper Maureen Breslin '99, but it will be Senior Day for Bucknell defenders Kate Ruda and Lindsey Gentel. From there, the Bison will participate in the Patriot League Tournament at Worcester, Mass. against either Holy Cross or American.
