Bucknell Indoor Track and Field Capture Dual Victories

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell University men's and women's indoor track and field teams hosted the Bucknell Octagonal in Gerhard Fieldhouse on Saturday. Both the men's and women's team placed first over seven competing institutions.
The men recorded a final score of 187 points, while the women finished with 157.5 points. Bucknell was joined by Duquesne, Lock Haven, Rider, Robert Morris, St. Francis (Pa.), Temple and Towson.
The Bison men placed first earning 66.5 points above the second place team, St. Francis (Pa.). To highlight the men's squad, junior Noel Powell became a provisional national qualifier while setting a new school record in the long jump. Powell received the gold medal after marking 25 feet even in the long jump, which surpasses his own personal best, 24'9.75". Powell also recorded a first place in the 200-meter with a time of 22.31 and third place in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.554.
In the high jump, Emory Strother received the silver medal with a 6' 3.5" mark. In the pole vault, Jeffrey Arek (14'9") received the gold, while Adam Jacob (14'3") was honored with the silver. Christian Thomson (13'3") also received points for the Bison in the pole vault. To complete the points in the field event, Adam Kaufman threw 47'6.5" in the weight, while Mike Mellas recorded 43'1.75" in the triple jump.
In the running events, Darrell Perry placed first in the 55-meter high hurdles (7.88), and Richard Alexander (7.896) marked fourth. Eric Furst was received the gold in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.24, while teammates Aaron Hanlon (3rd, 1:57.27), John Trotta (4th, 1:57.71) and Matias Palavecino (5th, 1:59.90) followed shortly behind. Brian Klotz received third place points in the 400-meter with a time of 50.44.
Bryan Johnston crossed the line first in the mile run, for a first place finish in 4:17.29. Wesley Reinhardt (4:19,05) and Sean McCarthy (4:22.72) marked third and fourth in the mile run. Johnston ran the 3000-meter in 8:37.34 to capture his second gold medal of the day, and Stephen Schaefer placed second with a time of 8:40.26.
Lou Palma captured a first place mark in the 1000-meter race with a time of 2:31.15. Kevin Walsh (2:34.68) and Thomas Prochilo (2:35.49) received third and fourth place, respectively. In the 5000-meter run, Nicholas Mousetis crossed the line at 15:21.65 to receive the silver medal.
The women's team captured a first place victory with a 55.5 point margin over second place Temple. In the women's weight throw, Angela McFarland, placed first, and Elizabeth Pendelton, placed second, both with a distance of 48'3.25". McFarland now stands eighth on Bucknell's all-time charts. Tolulope Fayanjuola tied for fifth in the high jump with a measurement of 5'1". She also recorded 18'0.25" in the long jump to receive third place honors.
Abigail Bouzan-Kaloustian received fourth place honors in the pole vault with a measurement of 10'4". Dionne Bonds recorded 36'1.5" in the triple jump for a fifth place finish, which places her ninth on the all-time charts. To round out the scoring on the field events, Laura Schaffer marked 41'5.75" in the shot put, and placed fourth. She improves her seventh place all-time slot and her personal best by 9.5".
Katherine Pfeifer (18:36.26) placed first in the 5000-meter, and Jamie Gow crossed the line at 18:45.11 for a third place mark. Fayanjuola placed fifth in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.49. Amy Calvo placed first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:19.47, and Jennifer Marsh placed third with a 2:21.02 mark. Nicki Piper captured 1:17.09 in the 500-meter event to receive the gold, and now stands fifth on the all-time charts.
Theresa Dennis placed second with a time of 5:14.86 in the mile race, and Jennifer Malcolm placed third with a time of 5:15.75. Rachel Tutmaher also received points in the mile crossing the line at 5:23.90. Charity Brady placed second in the 400-meter after finishing at 58.84. Brady also ran in the 200-meter and marked 26.28, and now is tied for eighth with teammate Fayanjuloa.
Kerryann Branker (3:07.55) and Kayla Halloran (3:07.84) placed second and third in the 1000-meter dash. Alison Cole marked second in the 3000-meter with a time of 10:40.34. Katie Fantauzzo (10:55.63), Julie Jakaboski (10:59.80) and Stephanie Keller (11:34.87) also received points for the Bison in the 3000-meter run.
The Bison women's 4x400-meter relay team produced a first place finish at the octagonal. Bucknell crossed the line first with a time of 3:56.15.
"Both the Bison teams came together to work hard for this victory," stated coach Joe Klim. "This is the best we have competed all season, with all-around good competition. A number of the athletes reached numerous personal-bests and top ten honors. Overall, both the teams came ready-to-play today."
The Orange and Blue will host the two-day Bison Open starting on Friday, Jan 31. Some members of the Bucknell squad will travel back to State College, Pa., for a two-day event on Jan. 31, to compete in the National Invitational.
